Hobbit dragon Smaug on the Colbert Report

On last night’s episode of The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert got to interview the mighty dragon Smaug, star of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy.

The CGI dragon burst into the studio to give a lengthy interview that was both terrifying and entertaining.

The Hobbit Benedict Cumberbatch Smaug motion-capture split screen

This week, actor and fan favorite Benedict Cumberbatch made his first appearance at the Geek mecca San Diego Comic-Con, where he took part in panels for two of his upcoming films: the DreamWorks animated movie, Penguins of Madagascar, where he voices a wolf, and of course, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, where does the voice and motion-capture performance for two characters – the Necromancer and the dragon Smaug.

Along with speaking on panels, Cumberbatch also stopped to pose with the LEGO dragon Smaug at the WB booth. Check out photos here below of the actor standing with the LEGO creation, which was made out of 83,433 LEGO bricks. That last two major roles in Peter Jackson‘s two–part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s classic story, The Hobbit, have now officially been filled.

Production on the movie is already underway in New Zealand but it’s being reported that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the feared dragon, Smaug. The actor was already part of the cast, voicing the role of Necromancer, but will now also provide the voice for the infamous dragon as well as bring it to life via the magic of performance capture.

How Much Is ‘Hobbit’ Dragon Smaug Worth? Forbes Figures It Out

Smaug - The Hobbit

Each year, Forbes releases their Fictional 15 list, where they figure out which fictional characters are the wealthiest. While characters like Scrooge McDuck, Richie Rich, and Simpsons boss C. Montgomery Burns continue to top the list each year, Twilight’s Carlisle Cullen is back for the second time (bumped from #1 to #2 with $36.2 billion), while “Jo” Bennett, the Sabre Corp. CEO from The Office, makes it on for the first time.

But, the big surprise addition to the list this year is none other than Smaug, the famous red-golden dragon from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel The Hobbit. While the dragon obviously doesn’t have a stock portfolio to analyze, the folks over at Forbes have ascertained that Smaug “sits atop an $8.6 billion-dollar hoard of gold, silver and gems,” placing the fictional beast at #7.
