| Rumor: Charlie Hunnam Top Pick For ‘Escape From New York’ RemakeWay back in 2011, New Line dropped plans for a remake of the cult classic, Escape From New York. Since then, producer Joel Silver has had his eye on the 1981 property directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, but there hasn’t been much movement on it for a while. Now, Starlog is reporting that Silver and his Silver Pictures already has a shortlist of actors they want to star as Plissken, including Sons Of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam, The Walking Dead‘s Jon Bernthal, and The Guest‘s Dan Stevens, according to their unnamed inside sources.

| Because, Awesome: The Snake Plissken Video Game That Almost Happened, Then Didn’t |
|
John Carpenter‘s 1981 post-apocalyptic action-thriller Escape from New York is one of my all-time favorite movies. Shot on a low-budget with the slums of St. Louis, Missouri subbing for the crime-riddled streets of a walled-off Manhattan Island, Carpenter delivered a thrilling adventure that has aged well and continues to lure in and surprise new fans with its fast-paced action set pieces and a lead performance from Kurt Russell as one of the big screen’s coolest anti-heroes: Snake Plissken. Ten years ago, it was revealed that the iconic eyepatch-sporting criminal with nothing to lose would be starring in his own video game created by Namco Hometek (Dead to Rights) and featuring Russell’s distinctive voice and likeness. Snake Plissken’s Escape was designed to be a third-person adventure game in the vein of the Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid (which also featured a hero named Snake) series. The game was scheduled to hit store shelves in Christmas 2005, but for reasons unknown it was cancelled and the project was never resurrected despite having a storyline approved by Russell, Carpenter, and their late producing partner Debra Hill. Below you’ll find an extended promo for the unreleased Escape game. Take a look and wonder with me at what might have been. A Snake Plissken video game? I would have bought an Xbox brand new for that.

| New Line Opts Not To Remake ‘Escape From New York’
New Line Cinema and Warner Brothers Pictures have decided not to remake the Kurt Russell cult classic, Escape From New York, which they had been developing for some time now. The powers that be at said companies have chosen to let their option on the property to expire, basically, and now the rights are up for grabs for another studio that may have a vision for bringing Snake Plissken back to life on the Big Screen.

| ‘Escape From New York’ Remake Gains Some Momentum |
|
It appears that New Line Cinema is ready to put a charge into their planned remake of John Carpenter‘s classic, Escape From New York. The studio has been trying to get the project in motion for a while now, but according to Vulture, they’re ready to move “quickly” on it after a new rewrite from Allan Loeb has them satisfied and raring to go…but with a few things toned down, it would seem. The original Escape From New York is a futuristic alternate history story, set in a 1997 dystopian New York City at the end of World War III. Due to the unbelievable rise in crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been turned into a maximum-security prison. When the President is taken hostage by an extremist group, Police Commissioner Bob Haulk (played by Lee Van Cleef) makes a special offer to Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a special forces soldier who turned to a life of crime: rescue the President within 24-hours, he will be given his complete freedom from the prison. What Plissken doesn’t know, is that if he fails or decides to try anything crazy, an explosive that was secretly injected into his body will be detonated.
