Pennywise in Stephen King's It

The two-part movie adaptation of Stephen King‘s It has found itself a new director.

The adaptation was being developed by Cary Fukunaga, the director of season one of HBO’s True Detective, for multiple years, and fans of It and the director’s work were all pretty excited. Then it all went to Hollywood Hell a couple of months back—because why should we get things that we want—when we found out that Fukunaga had reached his breaking point and departed the project after clashing swords with New Line Cinema, who had been passed the project from big sister studio Warner Brothers, over demands that the budget be cut.

At the time It was delayed indefinitely, and because of the Poltergeist remake‘s poor performance it was unclear if the movie would happen at all. With the hiring of a new director, it appears the plan is to still make this thing happen. So who did New Line choose to replace Fukunaga as the director of this movie based on King’s massive story about a group of kids (and eventual adults) dealing with fear incarnate?

Pennywise in Stephen King's It

In Hollywood, directors and actors become attached to projects only to eventually drop out of those projects almost as often as studios shift their upcoming movies’ release dates. It happens all the time, and so usually it’s easy for a movie fan to shrug it off and get on with their day. But this one…this one stings. A lot.

It’s being reported that Cary Fukunaga has walked away from the two-movie adaptation of Stephen King‘s massive horror tome It that he’s been working on for multiple years now. The devastating turn of events for those who have been eagerly awaiting what Fukunaga’s take on the horror classic might look like comes after the director reportedly clashed with studio New Line Cinema on numerous occasions.

Pennywise in Stephen King's It

The terrifying being known simply as “It” from Stephen King’s It, which has haunted most people’s childhood in its most familiar form, Pennywise the Clown (played memorably by Tim Curry in the 1990 TV miniseries adaptation), has been cast for the upcoming new movie adaptation of the book…and it is without a doubt an actor far, far away from the actors you were thinking might be cast.

It’s being reported that Will Poulter, the 22-year-old British actor best known for his roles in the comedy We’re the Millers and The Maze Runner, is in negotiations to play Pennywise.

Stephen King's It

We’ve been hearing about a new adaptation of author Stephen King‘s horror meganovel It for a long time now, and it looks like the time for it to finally become a reality is fast approaching. A couple of years back we found out that Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga would be making a two-part adaptation of the book, something that became even more exciting when people got a better idea of what Fukunaga brings to the table after seeing his work directing all eight episodes of the first season of HBO’s True Detective.

Producer Dan Lin spoke about It recently, saying that the current plan is to start officially prepping the first movie in March for a summer 2015 shoot. He also said that they even have the blessing of King himself, which should help fans of the book to feel better about the adaptation.

Stephen King’s ‘It’ Reboot To Have R-Rating

It

If you read Geeks of Doom often, you know I just can’t stand movies that simply need to be rated R based on their source material or previous films, but decided to water it down in the name of making more money with a larger PG-13 audience. It’s something that gets under my skin in ways that are challenging to define, and until I see an example of it working, I’ll continue on this path.

Thankfully, not everyone is so sick in the head that they need to resort to such blasphemies in order to find success. The man directing the theatrical reboot of Stephen King‘s It, Dave Kajganich, wrote in to Dread Central and gave an update on the project; and thankfully, he explained his desire to be faithful to King’s book as well as maintain its R-rated material.

Unfortunately, as we all know, the book is a true giant in size, which means that many things will still be lost along the way. Still, this should please many fans of the novel who hated the 1990 ABC mini-series adaptation. I’ve only ever known the mini-series and love that well-enough, but I’m definitely excited to see a more true-to-source movie.
