| ‘Super’…The Animated Series?!James Gunn, the former Troma Films writer who hit pay dirt with the script for the 2004 Zack Snyder-directed remake of Dawn of the Dead and made his directorial debut in 2006 with the sci-fi horror comedy Slither, has uncovered something very interesting which he linked to his Twitter feed just recently. Animation company Toonsmyth Productions has put together a 90-second video trailer for a mock cartoon based on Gunn’s most recent film, the subversive superhero comedy Super that starred Rainn Wilson as a lonely and disturbed man who becomes a costumed crimefighter named the Crimson Bolt, in the hope that some network might pick it up for a series, possibly the Cartoon Network for their Adult Swim line-up. You can watch the video here below.

DIRECTOR: James Gunn
WRITER: James Gunn
STARRING: Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Gregg Henry, Sean Gunn
IFC Films
RELEASE DATE: August 9, 2011 Just recently I reviewed a little indie flick called Griff the Invisible, one of three fairly recent movies about normal everyday folks creating and becoming their own superheros. The other two are 2010’s Kick–Ass, and director James Gunn‘s Super. At the time, I said that the three movies shouldn’t be compared (having a basic understanding of Super but not having seen it yet), and now, having seen all three, this is confirmed: all three are unique in their own special ways, and all three are very much worth seeing. Super tells the story of Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson), a lowly and rather pathetic man who works as a cook at a local diner. Frank only has two “perfect moments” in his life: when he married his wife, Sarah (Liv Tyler)””a recovering drug addict he met at work””and when he pointed the cops in the direction of a purse–snatching criminal.

The title character of Hesher, in the upcoming movie produced by Natalie Portman and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, was inspired by the late Metallica bass guitarist, Cliff Burton. Gordon-Levitt revealed the inspiration during a recent interview, in which he discussed how he based his performance of the iconic metal god’s behavior. Apparently, according to Gordon-Levitt, the current members of Metallica weren’t informed of the basis of the character before seeing the film, and were surprisingly reminded of the much-loved but long lost band member from years gone by. Burton is highly respected and lovingly remembered by the fans as well, so it will be interesting to see fan reaction to the performance as well.
