The Handmaid's Tale review

The Handmaid’s Tale
Paperback | Kindle | Audiobook
By Margaret Atwood
Publisher: Anchor Books | Penguin Random House
Release Date: December 31, 2013

Offred is a Handmaid, whose only purpose is to live a simple holy life in the household, and procreate with the Commander and his wife. In this new dystopian society that had overthrown the government, women have no rights and men have few as well. Well, men had more than most, but really only the rich ones. Offred is allowed to shop, but may only exchange minimal words with her shop partner. She was trained for this. The only place Offred can be herself is in her mind and her memories and even she second guesses herself doing that. When the Commander starts breaking the rules, Offred begins to remember what “before” was like, and the power of women.

The 70th Directors Guild of America Awards (DGA) have been given out, two of which went to directors who will be vying for the Academy Award for Best Director next month. While Guillermo del Toro earned an award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for his work on period piece fairy tale The Shape Of Water, Jordan Peele took home the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for his work on the terrifying thriller Get Out.

These awards are oftentimes a predictor of who will win the award for a said guild. SAG typically predicts who will win the performing awards, WGA the writing, PGA the best picture, and DGA the director. Check out the list of winners 2018 DGA winners for film and TV here below.

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water

The winners of the 2018 Producers Guild of America Awards were announced recently. The winners often are an indicator of who will win the top awards. So in the case for films, it will tell us who will win the Academy Award for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. In fact, the PGAs have correctly matched the Oscar for Best Picture in 19 of its 28 years. However, La La Land proved to be one of the exceptions last year, as it won the PGA, but lost to Moonlight for Best Picture.

This year, The Shape of Water, Coco, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Black Mirror came out as the big winners. Check out the full list of winners below.

Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale #1

I’ll get to the point first: The Handmaid’s Tale, as adapted by Hulu, is an excellent production and one well worth any TV lover’s time. Elisabeth Moss, an actress who spent nearly a decade understanding how female characters manage a life of oppression under male domination, uses her time on Mad Men to translate a fictional written diary into an uncompromising television reality.

With that out of the way, there’s a lot to unpack regarding the several episodes we took in before the show’s wide release on Wednesday, May 26. Hulu works in the best spirit of this current golden age of television. It presents an audience that’s hungry for thought-provoking content with a story that resonates with our current, unprecedented unique political climate.
