Justice League

We knew that DC’s New 52 program would be a sales hit when it was first announced. Too many big name creators on big name characters. Too many new #1 issues which collectors can’t resist. Too much buzz surrounding even the smallest of new series. What we didn’t know was how big of a success the initiative would be, but we are now starting to get an idea.

On DC’s blog The Source, the company announced the sales numbers for Justice League #1, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, and they are pretty good to say the least. Justice League was not only the best-selling title for the month of August, but it’s also the best-selling single issue for all of 2011. The first printing run for Justice League exceeded 200,000 copies and sold out within hours of going on sale, with a second printing selling out within a day. The book is now onto its third printing, only two weeks after its original release.

DC Relaunch: New DC Comics (Week Three)

As most of you may know by now, DC Comics is relaunching their entire line of comics this Fall alongside a day and date digital comics initiative. What you might not know, however, is that it all started two weeks ago with the releases of the last issue of DC’s summer event Flashpoint, and the beginning of the new universe with Justice League #1.

This Wednesday is the second big week of releases. I’m picking up a lot of these books, and there are still a lot of books to look forward to in these upcoming weeks, as well as plenty that you and I will probably want to stay away from for varying reasons. So, in the order of kindness and assignments from my editor, I will be breaking down each title with their creators, what they’re about, and what you can expect from each of the new books. And, guess what? I’m not in love with a lot of the decisions that they’ve made, so this should be fun!

Every Tuesday through the end of September, I will be writing another installment so you know when you can get yourself to the store, or to your mobile app, and purchase your new #1s from DC Comics! Also, it’s worth noting, dear reader, that since you’re coming to the game a little late, you can’t be guaranteed an issue at the comic book store, so call ahead to see if they have it. Or if you go the store and they don’t have any copies left of these DC books, you could always buy an indie comic like 27 The Second Set, Baltimore: The Curse Bells, Pigs, and Moon Girl, which all come out this week, coincidentally. There’s more to comics than just superheroes from DC and Marvel, you know?

But that’s probably why you’re here, and now that I’ve gotten the indie comics alternative plug out of the way, let’s talk about the universe that I’d rather live in, the DC Universe!

North Carolina Comic Shop Owner Bans ‘Action Comics’, Then Lifts Ban

New 52 - Action Comics #1

In the most ridiculous news story related comic books this week, North Carolina-based retailer The Comic Conspiracy bans the newly relaunched Action Comics and then lifts the ban two days later.

Why did he ban the comic? Well, in case you don’t read comics, apparently there has been a socialist left-wing liberal agenda that has populated comic books over the past 75 years. And it all came to a head on Wednesday when the Grant Morrison-scripted Action Comics showed Superman utter the horribly offensive “GD.” The shock of reading Superman being hit by an explosion and grunting crossed the line for the comic retailer as he took to his Facebook page and let those commies know what’s what. Here’s a series of those Facebook posts here below.

At DC’s Flashpoint panel on Thursday at the San Diego Comic-Con 2011, DC Entertainment’s Executive Editor Eddie Berganza gave a hint as to what expect for DC’s September relaunch.

When FLASHPOINT started, we said “˜everything you know will change in a flash! Look through FLASHPOINT as well as the various mini-series and you start to get a hint at what that change means with DC Comics-The New 52! And with FLASHPOINT #5, you will clearly see how it all comes about “¦ and we give you other things to ponder as the DC Comics-The New 52 start to come out. August 31st is just the beginning!

Week of Geek: SDCC 2011 Coverage - San Diego Comic Con

While taking a beating at the DC Comics New 52 panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio offered up a few bits of interesting information that did get reaction — good and bad — from the packed house.

DiDio question after question regarding Wally West, a staple in the Flash family that has been missing from the DC Universe for quite some time, at least in a major role. DiDio explained that the main goal of the new 52 is to focus the stories on one character making it easier for new readers to jump into the books. For now, and the foreseeable future that character, when it comes to Flash, is Barry Allen. Many audience members complained that there are still going to be multiple Robins, so there should be multiple Flash’s. DiDio stuck to his guns though. In an attempt to assuage some tensions about the history of the characters, DiDio and team explained that the histories that we all know and love aren’t being forgotten, just retold and modernized in one issue, the first of these new series.
