The first Hall H panel of the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was for DreamWorks’ animated feature MegaMind.

HitFix’s Drew McWeeney introduced Will Ferrell, who came out festooned in blue facepaint with a huge dome helmet as the titular character. He introduced Tina Fey (who came out uncostumed) and they introduced Jonah Hill and the director, Tom McGrath. Brad Pitt made a non-appearance as a cardboard standee.

They played five minutes of the film in Real 3D, which featured Ferrell’s MegaMind character, a villain whose mission is to defeat his nemesis, MetroMan, a hero voiced by Brad Pitt. The twist occurs when he actually does defeat MetroMan and has to figure out what to do next, now that the city is his.

Is your life monotonous? Do you feel like you are bored of your partner. Well stop whining and go watch Date Night!

I really did not know what to make of this movie when I first saw the preview. I really like Tina Fey and Steve Carell and their comedy style. I really cannot think of an instance where these two have worked together, at least if there was one I never saw it. So I was extremely interested to see what kind of chemistry they have.

The most exciting pull of the whole movie though is definitely the cast. When I watched the preview and saw stars like Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Jimmi Simpson, and Common, I knew this movie would have star power at the very least.

Well being that this is a slow weekend for movies this was a nice little story that I really enjoyed. It’s a somewhat unoriginal premise but then takes that and spins it with a more realistic couple and more realistic reaction to a crazy situation. The comedy was great and the improvisation stands out because it really was quite hilarious. Anyways, I am ready to get to the SPOILER TALK, how about you?

It seems like good comedies are increasingly hard to come by these days. Why bother with decent writing and actors with skilled comedic timing when you can just make pop culture references and poop jokes? Yes, I’m looking at you Friedberg and Seltzer.

Date Night, on the other hand, will probably be remembered as the best comedy of 2010. While the film is already be called this year’s The Hangover, I’m going to just say something that will probably bring me ridicule and debate. Date Night is better than The Hangover. Obviously comedic values are very subjective, but I personally find awkward, fish-out-of-water comedy much more entertaining than drunken wackiness. Each has their place, but I think in the long run Date Night will appeal to more people as The Hangover is more of the definitive “guy movie.”

Date Night stars a powerhouse of comedic talent in Tina Fey and Steve Carell. Carell has proven himself to be a strong comedic lead with The Office and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Fey may just be the most talented comedic writer in television today. While they don’t have much romantic chemistry between them on screen, the plot only requires that they have comedic chemistry, of which they have plenty.

30 Rock

Last season, I tuned into the 30 Rock premiere with high expectations, only to be met by the awkward-and-not-in-a-good-way SeinfeldVision. After a consistently hilarious second season, everything in SeinfeldVision felt off, as if the writers had suddenly changed focus. The episode proved to be the harbinger of a disappointing season that, while still occasionally brilliant, relied far too heavily on big-name guest stars while letting its strong supporting cast fall to the wayside.

Fortunately, this season’s premiere — the cutely named Season 4 — was a happier beginning. We got a good amount of time with all of the secondary characters, including the oft-forgotten Josh, as well as all the clever one-liners we could possibly expect from a half-hour of comedy (my favorite: Pete’s “Another actor? Why? They have so many feelings and opinions!” Okay, it’s in Scott Adsit’s delivery. It’s not as funny written down). Plus, Steve Buscemi! It had its flaws, however. The theme of the episode — drawing in more mainstream viewers — may be a bit too on-the-nose for some, considering 30 Rock‘s notoriously low ratings. And it wasn’t a standout episode for any of the main cast, Kenneth in particular. But I’ll get to that later.

The clever folks over at io9 have put together a video montage of science fiction moments from the NBC hit comedy 30 Rock.

Fans of the show who know their scifi know that quite often the show’s leading lady, Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), loves to spout out references to scifi and other items of geek culture, and even wore a Princess Leia costume to jury duty to get out of serving. One time she was so impressed with an apartment that she exclaimed, “By hammer of Thor!” You don’t hear much like that on TV sitcoms. The sitcom has also incorporated spoofs of popular scifi and has had some primo scifi alumni guests like Carrie Fisher and Adam West.
