Michael Bay

It came as a shock that Michael Bay would be following the big-budget blockbuster Transformers: Dark of the Moon with a smaller budgeted fact-based flick, Pain and Gain. Now that the filmmaker has completed principal photography with his $20 million passion project, he will be getting back to work with Transformers 4.

The film won’t see the return of the principal human cast and there may be a reason for it. In an interview with the LA Times, not only did Bay say that the fourth film could take place in space, but to describe Transformers 4 as a reboot would not be accurate.

Michael Bay

So just in case you haven’t had your fill of Transformers with three major features and a ride that recently opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, there is the forthcoming movie that is to be directed by Michael Bay. The director, who helmed the first three Transformers movies, will be coming back for a fourth and final time. At least it will be the final time.

Bay, who gave the LA Times a few details about the fourth untitled Transformers movie, mentioned that there will be new designs, a new cast, and that it will be the set up for the next director who helms the next wave of Transformers films. Because let’s face it, there is going to be more.

Transformers

Whether or not another Transformers movie would be made or not was never really a question—the franchise has made over $2.5 billion at the box office, the latest installment, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, bringing in more than $1.1 billion alone. The real question was whether Michael Bay would return to direct for a fourth time, and what cast would be returning.

Now we have some answers by way of producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who spoke to MTV recently. The producer said that Bay will indeed be returning to direct Transformers 4, and that the movie would be arriving some time in 2014. This has since been confirmed by Paramount Pictures, who sent out a press release announcing Bay’s involvement and a June 29, 2014 release date.

Color this writer far from shocked.

Vulture is reporting that Michael Bay is in talks to come back and helm the fourth film in the Transformers franchise.

The outlet reports that the film will shoot following Bay’s next film, Pain And Gain, and that star Shia LaBeouf is likely to skip out on this project. Furthermore, the fifth film will likely shoot following the next one, but that has yet to be confirmed by anyone involved.

Transformers

It’s a popular way to save some money, knocking two movies out in one long grueling shoot, and it’s something that’s now being considered for Transformers 4 and Transformers 5.

Hasbro, the toy company behind the Transformers brand, sees massive dollar signs with the third movie in the film franchise, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, recently pulling in over $1 billion worldwide, as any business would. So, as was just reported, they’re now in “active discussions” with Paramount Pictures, director Michael Bay, and producer Steven Spielberg to figure out what the next step for the franchise will be, and now the added possibility of producing two films in one shot.
