Ghostbusters Twinkie

If you were worried that the new Ghostbusters reboot wouldn’t bring with it new toys and merchandise and cross promotions with various food products to help market the movie, worry no more.

Not only have we seen peeks at toys that are on the way, but we’re getting an idea of the foods you’ll likely be more interested in collecting than actually consuming. Breaking Bad Twinkies Ad

Back in the late 1970s, Hostess ran ads in comic books for their fruit pies, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and other baked delights featuring the comic superheroes and villains popular during the era, including Captain America, Batman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Joker, Penguin… even Archie and Casper got a shot at being a fruit pie shill.

In tribute to those bygone days when comic celebrity endorsement resulted in an incongruous mix of the most badass superheroes and sweet, flaky pastry, illustrator Brendan Tobin created a spoof ad featuring Breaking Bad‘s Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. The duo are portrayed in a season one scenario, cooking meth inside their Fleetwood Bounder RV, when Jesse introduces Walter to the wonders of sponge cake and Polysorbate 60, inspiring Walter to quit cooking meth and start “baking bad.”

Twinkies

Twinkies and all the other products produced by the Hostess Company, which has been producing many compact dessert confections for decades and is the principal owner of other brands as Wonder Bread and the Drake’s line of cupcakes and snacks, is saying goodbye. The company ceased production, claimed bankruptcy, and moves to sell all its assets, various sources including CNN reported today. The company also plans to lay off over 18,000 employees.

A major pop cultural icon in the gourmet sense and junk food of the highest order, the Twinkie, which has to stand as the benchmark product offered in the Hostess oeuvre, is the 5-star standard in a quick snack. Invented in 1930 in Illinois, the cylinder-shaped golden sponge cake with cream in the middle has and continues to continued to adorn lunchboxes for children of all ages for decades and decades; it’s become the stereotypical after meal treat in those situations.
