Relapse Records 25th Anniversary Sampler Art

If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool metal fan like me, you need no introduction to independent label Relapse Records. For the last quarter of a century the Philadelphia record label has been home to some of the most revered acts in the metal world. Their roster reads like a who’s who of influential and beloved artists: High On Fire, Mastodon, Pig Destroyer, A.C., Death, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dying Fetus, Obituary, Nile, Suffocation, Neurosis, Voivod, Revocation, and many, many more have called the label home at one point or another.

So, imagine my excitement when I heard that, in celebrating their 25th anniversary, Relapse has posted a 184-song sampler to their bandcamp page and it is a 100% FREE download. Yeah, you read that right — 184 tracks for free!

Voivod and Napalm Death tour 2015 banner

Canadian thrash metal visionaries Voivod are teaming up this winter with British grindcore pioneers Napalm Death for a North American tour, titled “Through Space and Grind.”

The 2015 North American tour will feature opening acts Exhumed, Iron Reagan, and Black Crown Initiate with special guests Ringworm, Dayglo Abortions, Theories, and Phobia on select dates. You can see the full list of tour dates here below.

Back in January 2013, Voivod released their 13th studio album, Target Earth, their first with guitarist Daniel Mongrain aka Chewy (replacing the late Denis D’Amour aka Piggy, who passed away in 2005) and marked the return of original bassist Jean-Yves Theriault (Blacky), who has since left the band. Newcomer Dominique Laroche aka Rocky has taken over bass duties.

Bassist Jean-Yves “Blacky” Thériault has left the band Voivod for “personal reasons,” according to an official post today on the band’s Facebook page.

The announcement states that the 51-year-old bassist will no longer be performing live with the Canadian thrash metal outfit he co-founded back in 1982 and that he has left the band entirely. Blacky first quit Voivod after the release of their 1991 album Angel Rat, but returned to the fold in 2008 and was on their latest effort, 2013’s Target Earth.

Voivod Target Earth

As part of Amazon’s monthly $5 MP3 album deals, Target Earth is on sale right now in MP3 format for only $5.00. (The CD is currently $13.87 and is an AutoRip, which means with the CD purchase you’ll also get a FREE MP3 download of the entire album.)

Target Earth, which was released in North America on January 22, 2013, is the 13th studio album from the Canadian progressive thrash metal band and is the first with new guitarist Daniel Mongrain aka Chewy, who replaced the late Denis D’Amour aka Piggy; the album also marks the return of original bassist Jean-Yves Theriault (Blacky), who hasn’t been on a Voivod album since 1991’s Angel Rat. This is a kick-ass album, sure to please Voivod fans and metalheads alike.

Also on sale right now for only $5.00 is the MP3 for Voivod’s debut album, 1984’s War and Pain, which contains standouts like “”Suck Your Bone,” “Blower,” and one of my favorites “Voivod” (the first song Voivod I ever heard).
