While attending the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Iron Man 3, Yahoo Movies caught up with Joss Whedon, writer-director of Marvel’s The Avengers to discuss the status of the highly anticipated 2015 sequel.
In the video, which you can see below, Whedon confirmed that he recently finished a first draft of the script for The Avengers 2, and that “we’re in a really good place.”
And then, Whedon dropped this little bit of info…
“I’ve got these two characters”¦ two of my favorite characters from the comic book”¦ a brother-sister act”¦ THEY’RE in the movie, that’s exciting.”
Unless I’m mistaken and there’s some other notable brother-sister act from Avengers history, it sounds like Whedon’s talking about Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, better known as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
There’s been some question about which studio owns the mutant siblings’ live-action film rights. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige said last year:
“It’s a little complicated; If [Fox] wants to use them in an X-Men movie they could, if we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could.”
My understanding is that Marvel Studios can use Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as long as they’re never described as mutants – because Fox owns that piece of the pie. So that means, if they’re featured in Avengers 2, the Maximoffs won’t be referred to as Magneto’s children and they’ll need a new explanation for the origins of their powers and abilities.
In The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) mentions a cellist in Portland that he’s been romantically involved with. Many believed this was a reference to Wanda Maximoff, who has been seen playing a cello in the comics. With rumors abound that Coulson will be resurrected as the android Vision, the comic book romance of Scarlet Witch and Vision could be coming to the big screen!
What do you think? Could Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver be in Whedon’s next Avengers film? Or is there another notable brother-sister duo in the Marvel universe he could be referring to?

Wanda was never a cellist. Kate Bishop is one though.
