A whole lot of buzz is building about a certain video game from Electronic Arts that’s apparently being called Dante’s Inferno and is taken from the Inferno chapter of Dante’s classic The Divine Comedy. This was very recently part of a massive studio bidding war for the rights to make it into a movie at some point. Out of all of the studios, Universal eventually won out.
The peculiar thing is that at this point, the game is nowhere near actually being released. Does this mean that this game OR its storyline is so unimaginably good, people absolutely had to have it right here and now without waiting to see if it actually was enjoyed by gamers? It’s very hard to say at this point. You have to imagine that all of these studios knew things that we currently do not. Something had to set it off. There’s a chance that the story was very much wanted to begin with and EA won, but I highly doubt that, considering the story has been around like 700 years and studios have a lot of money to toss around.
The story for the game seems to come from Dante’s progress through the 9 circles of the Inferno (Hell) level of The Divine Comedy, which also includes Purgatorio, and Paradiso (Purgatory and Paradise). No information on if the game will also cover the other areas or just the Hell section.
I can only imagine that this very interesting story/poem has a great chance at coming through in a big way on both the video game and movie mediums and I’m very interested to see how it all plays out. Hopefully they live up to the hype that’s built up and avoid too much hype ruining the party.
