Geek Talk: ‘World of Warcraft’ 3.1.0

World of Warcraft Patch 3.1.0 UlduarSo, as always, the face of World of Warcraft is ever changing. With this most recent patch we see some interesting ideas being implemented, some new areas opening up and as always, huge changes to every class within at least one talent specialization.

I’m not going over the changes to classes or professions or any of that (even though I would like to know which was the profession that got a 32 slot herb bags and how you obtain the right to make them)–You can find all those things on Wowhead, including up-to-date talent calculators. Instead, what I am going to go over is some of the Epicness of Ulduar, who exactly is Yogg-Saron is and why you should care & probably some other stuff as well.

First off, did anyone else see the sweet video that Blizzard posted on patch day? A lot of interesting things happen, including a brief clash. Yogg-Saron, the old God of death gets mentioned, and as luck would have it, he is a boss in Ulduar. It turns out the Titans forced all the old Gods underground and imprisoned them there, because killing them would have killed Azeroth. It is believed, due to what is said in the video, that Yogg is the source of corruption you see across much of Northrend, and is pretty much controlling everything you will face in Ulduar. Suffice to say he is as much an antagonist as Arthus or the Lich King in WoW:WotLK. Yogg’s voice can now even be heard whispering things to player who venture into the Ymirheim Saronite Mines and Whisper Gulch.

Now…

Ulduar: I’m sure I could write a huge section about how awesome this place will be, but it would pretty much be this rewritten. That being said, Ulduar is in northern Storm Peaks and both the ‘Hall’ instances (Lightning and Stone) are part of it. One cool thing I can tell you about it is you will be able to control boss fights in terms of how difficult your group makes them. Meaning, there will be ways to interactively change how a boss fight will go based on on variations within your raid party. I will know far more and possibly write about this once I have seen it all first hand.

Ice Crown: The northeastern area of Ice Crown has been altered by the Argent Crusade. It’s now a medieval gaming arena of sorts. This area has many new daily quests (dalies) that will change as you rise in rank within the tournament. The higher rank you are, the better and more satisfying your quest rewards will be. Once you reach champion status your turn-ins will get you a new currency called Champions Seal. Champions Seal will be able to be turned in for, you guessed it, new tier items, reputation rewards and other random epic stuff.

Dual-Talent Specification: Finally, we come to Dual-Spec. Yeah, not much needs to be said about this other than please send me 1000 gold. I’m a poor Tauren (c/o Tarsonus, Server: Dalvengyr). Yes, this is an awesome skill that is going to make raid parties far more flexible. Awesome job on this one Blizzard!

Yes, all in all everyone should have something to rejoice about with the launch of patch 3.1.0. Now if only we didn’t have to wait all night for the download to be able to experience it. In any case, it’s here and we can all finally be WoWed again.

Have you downloaded WoW patch 3.1.0 yet? Are you dual-spec’d out? We wanna hear from you. Post your thoughts and experiences with it below.

  2. I totally forgot there was a patch! Spent a bunch of the time I would have gamed patching. I’m such a casual player now that what I was all WOOHOO about was the Daily Fishing Quest. Yes, I am the fishing queen. HAR!

Kinda cool thing they added was for BGs (At least AV) that friendies appear in the mini map by a colour coded dot depending on their class. Can’t remember the colours? Check the raid tab – it’s the same. I just wish the white (priest) one didn’t stand out so much.. me like being incognito!

  5. Hmmm…more ripping off of Lovecraftian names/elements for this retarded game. Can Blizzard at least come out and admit their ripping off the old gentleman from Providence and his mythos for their “Old Gods”?

  6. while i agree with you that they are indeed ripping off Lovecraft…his works are public domain and i think they have put the names to some pretty decent use thus far.

i think if anything it shows the potency and skill with which Lovecraft wrote his stories that a huge company would bother to basically rip off his elder gods.

  7. Patch 3.1 has breathed new life into Warcraft; the Ulduar instance looks gorgeous but the bosses are deadly. Our guild wiping on Freya for a couple of nights. Though once again; similarly to Naxxramas, Ulduar is just a stop gap until we can rock on up to Icecrown Citadel and go toe to toe with Arthus :)
