Have Fun Studying With ‘Twilight’ Test Prep Follow-Up ‘Defining New Moon’

All the haters can say what they will about the Twilight franchise, but there’s one positive aspect about the whole phenomenon that can’t be denied — it’s prompted teenage girls to read more.

Young girls (and their moms) are not only picking up the Twilight books, but also literary classics like Wuthering Heights, and the series has sparked interest in the horror/fantasy genre in general, serving as a gateway to more books like Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire series (from which HBO’s True Blood is based) and more.

Twilight‘s also become helpful in the test prep department with Defining Twilight, a vocabulary workbook to help students prepare for tests like the SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT.

Now, just released this week is the New Moon-inspired follow-up Defining New Moon, with over 700 vocabulary words and synonyms found on the SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT tests.

My teenaged niece, who introduced me to the Twilight series back in early 2008, can tell you that I’ve been quizzing her on SAT words since she was 12, so a workbook like this would be a perfect ancillary to her studies. Plus, if you have a teen who’s not too thrilled about studying, this may be the way to go, adding a fun, familiar element to their studies.

Reading + Learning = Good.

Here’s more info on the New Moon workbook:

  • Each chapter of the workbook gives you eight words taken from New Moon, with page references to read the words in context.
  • Students define the words on their own before turning back to the workbook for actual definitions.
  • Drills and quizzes help readers review and integrate what they’ve learned.
  • Synonyms, Latin word parts, and memorization tools are included throughout the workbook.

  1. All this Twilight coverage is really annoying. Is there no other GEEK news to report on? Game reviews, Software reviews, heck i’d settle for a review of someone’s lunch over any more Twilight news :-(

  2. There isn’t a single teenager in this United States of America who would be duped into thinking that learning is fun, even if it is Twilight (spits) related. But it is an interesting idea. And I never considered the good that could come of Twilight (spits). Every woman I know has read the book. Like seriously. All of them.
