Tobey Maguire Calms The Waters; Says ‘Spider-Man 4’ Delay Is Normal

Spider-Man

As news spilled out recently that Spider-Man 4 was on an indefinite vacation, something of a panic seemed to arise from those who worried the movie was already destined for disaster. As far as we knew, it was just some script problems and issues choosing the right villain (a choice that could immediately make or break the movie for some fans), but something about the whole thing felt damaging.

While everyone else was running around trying to figure out what this means for Spidey, the star of the franchise isn’t worried one little bit. Tobey Maguire recently took part in a little web cam chit-chat with The Envelope, where he assured everyone that not only is this all just how things go with movies of this size, but that there’s actually a lot going very right as well.

Here’s what Maguire had to say in an attempt to calm people down (Quotes transcribed by Superhero Hype).

Like anything, it’s a process. We’re just in the midst of the process. We have a lot of great stuff in terms of story and script. We’re just trying to dial it in and get it ready as quickly as possible. Of course, these movies are a very big undertaking and take a lot more time than a drama or something more straightforward.

That clearly makes things sound a lot more relaxed than they seemed, so who knows where everything really stands right now. Right after the film’s halt was announced, it was also reported that Marvel’s other big 2011 movie, Thor, was jumping into Spidey‘s May 6 spot (Read: “˜Spider-Man 4″² Moves Out, “˜Thor’ & “˜Pirates Of The Caribbean 4″² Move In!), but from what I gather now, Spider-Man 4 hasn’t officially vacated that date, and still does have plans of releasing in 2011. There’s no way that anyone involved in the two movies — especially Marvel — would be okay with these two going head-to-head in theaters, leaving us to wonder how this will all play out.

Another interesting quote pulled from this Tobey Maguire talk touched on his enthusiasm for the character and the growth of the franchise as a whole.

Not only do I have specific ideas, but the ideas are evolving on the page. It’s all happening right now. It’s all sort of coming together. It’s very exciting to me. I think the evolution of the character is really exciting, to be rooted in the history of what we’ve done already and to have a continuity, yet have a progression or evolution.

This doesn’t really mean anything, but reading that, I can’t help but think about the Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 movies that are already being written. Has Tobey finally accepted the identity and embraced this role, and does this enhance the chances of us seeing him in even more movies? It feels like the moment the first Spider-Man was complete, rumors of Maguire coming back or not have always hovered around the sequels, but he always ended up returning. To hear him sharing some strong excitement for the work that he’s done and the character he’s portraying is actually rather refreshing.

  1. Hazarrrrrrrrr!!

Raimi and maguire are out of there!!!!! Newsbreaking all over the net today. Sony have officially pulled the plug on Rami and maguire. Their will be no spiderman 4 5 or 6. Sony have instead decided to reboot the entire franchise with new Actors and directors. About damn time!!

Maybe now we have a chance of getting that Spidey Vs Venom movie we all wanted to see. Spiderman 3 sure as hell wasn’t it.
