Many names were reportedly in consideration for the role of Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America. We were told of quite a few of them toward the end of February (Read: Want To Know Who’s In The Running To Become Captain America?), but ironically, it’s now two candidates that were not part of that list who have won the lead roles.
It’s being reported that Sebastian Stan, who was at one time a possible choice to become the Captain himself, has been cast in the role of Bucky Barnes. He joins Chris Evans, who of course was recently offered and accepted the job to play the highly coveted superhero role.
In the comic books, Barnes’ father is killed in military training right before the United States enters World War II. Orphaned, Barnes is taken in by the military camp as their own, making him their mascot. At first he’s too young to actually fight alongside the soldiers, but he eventually discovers his friend Steve Rogers’ secret Captain America identity and joins him as his partner.
The deal locks Stan up for a possible 5-6 movies, which makes it a real possibility that fans will see him eventually evolve into his later persona, Winter Soldier.
As in the comics, Captain America and Bucky Barnes will be squaring off against the evil Nazi villain Red Skull, who will be played by Hugo Weaving.
The First Avenger: Captain America is directed by Joe Johnston, and will be released on July 22, 2011.
