All-Star Superman Blu-ray DVDA lot of comic fans have been looking forward to the next DC Universe Animated Feature, All-Star Superman, and now they have a date to look forward to. It was announced that the DVD and Blu-ray will be released on February 22, 2011. We also got a look at the cover which doesn’t look like it was actually done by Frank Quietly, artist of the comic series the movie is based on, but it does look very similar to his style.

See the cover art here at right.

All-Star Superman is as I said, based on the comic of the same name, written by Grant Morrison with art by Quietly. The story follows a dying Superman as he faces his last days and has one last battle with Lex Luthor. The comic is one of the best series of the last few years, and it will be interesting to see how the unique story is translated into a 70-minute movie.

The movie is executive produced by Bruce Timm (mastermind of the DC animated universe), directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) and written by Dwayne McDuffie (also Crisis on Two Earths, as well as a bunch of Justice League Unlimited episodes). The movie features James Denton as Superman, Christina Hendricks as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia as Lex Luther.

The 2-disc DVD will have a look at the next DC Universe feature, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, as well as a look at how Grant Morrison came up with the original story, and then two episodes from Bruce Timm’s TV series, I’m guessing they’re going to be Superman-themed episodes. The Blu-ray will have the same features as the DVD and will also feature an interview with Morrison, audio commentary on the feature by Timm and Morrison, an All-star Superman digital comic book, and a digital copy of the film.

I loved the comic series, and I’m pretty excited about this one. I’m curious to see how it is translated into a fairly short movie, but I’m hopeful that the creators can pull it off. I guess we’ll just have to wait a few more months until we find out.
