Warner Brothers Still Plans To Make More ‘Green Lantern’ Movies Despite Poor Box Office Numbers

Nothing is officially greenlit yet, but sources are saying that Warner Brothers is still planning to continue on with their Green Lantern franchise even though the movie hasn’t quite lived up to the massive amounts of money put into making and marketing it.
The DC Comics superhero flick, which stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead, cost WB around $200 million to make, and so far has only made $118 million worldwide in two weeks of release. Adding salt to the wound, the price tag doesn’t even include said marketing fees, which are reportedly some of the highest ever paid to promote a movie.
Many who saw the endless TV spots and trailers for Green Lantern, which account for a large chunk of those marketing costs, responded very negatively to the CGI effects, which did look pretty cartoony. And so spending so much to get the movie to as many eyes as possible may have ultimately hurt its success more than it helped.
Even so, it looks like the studio won’t give up that easily. So the question becomes will Warner Brothers make a sequel starring Reynolds (who is still expected to jump back to Marvel and play Deadpool for them), or will they take the popular “insta-reboot” option and just start from scratch with a new star, new filmmakers, and an entirely new approach to bringing the Lantern to the big screen?
How would you move forward with future Green Lantern movies?
I didn’t think Green Lantern was that bad. It was medocre though, but I believe it does set up enough for a pretty good sequel. As long as it actually focuses on policing the galaxy. Â
I think the biggest problem with the GL movie was you could tell they wanted to make this a trilogy. Sinestro should have become the bad guy half way through this movie. Instead they went with a villain that was uninteresting and not at all threatening. I can only hope the second one is going to be about the Sinestro corps war. You know what just get Geoff Jones to write the second one.Â
I think I’d like to be a fan of this franchise as I love bombastic intergalactic concepts. I think Reynolds should stick to rom-coms, and I’m quite amused by this poll to get Nathan Fillion into the role, he could be really good!!
Developing GL (and the Corps) for the average movie-goer is an ambitious goal and they couldn’t possibly appeal to all people on the first go around. That GL even made it to theaters speaks volumes and WB ought to give the GL franchise another chance! Most effects improve with experience. Remember the Incredible Hulk? Same complaints about cartoony CGI effects. By the time Hulk came out, he was much more realistic looking (for a monstrous green anti-hero). GL will improve as well, Ryan Reynolds will shed some of the ham, there will be a better villain and no need to squeeze in so much GL Corps background info. They can just go with the story, fill in some blanks here and there and build on the characters instead of establishing them for the first time. And completely agree about a more compelling villain! Bring on war with the Sinestro Corps!
This is a character that has ALOT of promise, great history and fantastic stories. What they did with the mythology of OA, Parallax and the Yellow Rings were ridiculous. I watched it with my wife and I had talked up the character so much that she looked at me several times during the movie and asked, “Is that right?”Â
The score and helicopter scene were stolen straight off the original Superman movie and that’s not a compliment! I mean seriously that’s a movie that’s vintage and the best the writers could do was crib off of a movie that was made over 30 years ago?Â
I really expected this to be knocked out of the park and was greatly disappointed.Â
I think a lot of the hardcore fans were disappointed, but too bad. The move wasn’t made for the 2% who have read every GL comic book. They had to make this movie appeal to a large audience and that’s what they did. Now that the origin story is out of the way, they can move on to bigger things in a sequel. I was only marginally familiar with GL and I enjoyed it for what it was.
Change the actor, make a reboot. Ryan Reynolds was a seriously bad decision, the guy is a shit actor.I’m not a comic book reader, so I really don’t care if it differs from the source material. But when they choose a rubbish cast, I wont even bother seeing it at all.
I think the producers dropped the ball with this one. What better way for hollywood to come up with a (non-spoof) black super hero than to have John Stewart be the center of this GL film? All the expository nonsence of the orrigin of the Lanterns and how humans are new to the game would have taken about 30 seconds of film time to get it out of the way, because, hey let’s face it: an origin story = borring. Could have had an older, more experienced Hall walking John through his first training with the ring. John is a badass GL; he’s a former marine and at least with him there is no whining about his stupid feelings.Â
