GoD List Banner

There are a lot of great comics coming out this week, including, but not limited to Sweet Tooth, Flashpoint and its tie-ins like Secret Seven and Knight of Vengeance, some killer Image books, and also the return of Palmiotti and Gray to Claws from Marvel. But for all the good comics, we have our Bluewaters. So, it’s up to Henchman 21 and MK2FAC3 to sift through their boxes and pull out what could be potentially the best of the week. And this week? This week is like a sprained ankle, boy. It ain’t nothin’ to play with. We’ve got Cibopaths, Spies, Western tales, tennis players, the six most dysfunctional characters in DC comics, and Marvel’s super event, as well as collections about music and books that kill people! It’s an action-packed week, so crouch up to your monitors and read every pixel of The GoD List. You’re life depends on it.

It was a holiday weekend in the U.S., but a lot of stores get their shipments on Tuesdays now, so make sure your store has new books today before you go to pick these books up.

ISSUES:

Chew #19Chew #19 (Image Comics – $2.99): Every month this book ranks at the top of my favorites, so of course issue 19 of Chew will be featured on this list. Last time, the creative team took us far into the future to show us how things were going to be next year, which a fantastic thing you can only really do with a creator-owned book like Chew, but in this issue, we get the fourth issue in the current storyline “Flambe.” I love this series with all my heart, and I can’t go too long without a fix. Just yesterday, I thought to myself, “Self, when do I get to read the next issue of Chew?” Well, self, you don’t have to wait long at all, because Chew is hitting stands this week! Hooray!

Jonah Hex #69 (DC Comics – $2.99): This right here is what you call domination. Jeff Lemire has a new issue of Sweet Tooth to accompany his first appearance on the Jonah Hex that has been creatively controlled by the master team of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray over the past several issues. Not only Lemire, but Palmiotti and Gray are also dominating this week’s releases with this issue of Jonah Hex, the first issue of Claws 2 on Marvel, and the Trailblazer one shot/OGN on Image! My mind and eyes say yes, but my wallet says “no, no, no!” Palmiotti and Gray have been doing an outstanding job on Jonah Hex without a doubt, but the addition of Lemire to this line up is just insanely amazing. Jeff Lemire’s art style, if you haven’t read any of his amazing creator-owned works, is a little weird and somewhat difficult to get used to right away, but that’s only because it’s so unique. You don’t see an artist like Lemire that often, nor do you see such strong writers like Gray and Palmiotti, but with all of them together, Jonah Hex #69 has the potential to be one of the best comics of the year. Do not miss out on this issue.

Secret Six #35 (DC Comics – $2.99): I wasn’t lying to you when I told you this book has a permanent spot on my portion of the list, well through August at least. Bane has been the center piece of this group for quite some time now, with him determined to turn his life around, drop the poisonous venom from his body, and try to become a better man. But as of recent happenings, it looks like his attempts may hold no bearing on his future. Why should Bane become a better person if the world around him is still crumbling to pieces? These are the questions to ask as this series wraps up. This is the penultimate issue of Secret Six, and if the past is any way to judge, this book won’t have a happy ending.

COLLECTION:

27 (Twenty-Seven) Vol. 1: First Set (Image Comics – $16.99): I love music, and I love comics, and I’ve been told that, since that’s the case, I will love this book. I don’t know if I will, but I’m definitely interested. The book seems to focus on the infamous 27 Club, a group of several rock stars who have met their fate at the age of 27. I’m not sure how they will approach this strange phenomenon in their comic. But I’m definitely intrigued. Check it out with me, won’t you?

HENCHMAN 21

(This Week, The Part of Henchman 21 Will Be Played By MK2FAC3. Hench 4 Life.)

Hi, I’m Henchman21 and I like Marvel and G.I. JOE, so that’s what my picks are going to consist of, mostly. Sure there will be a couple of exceptions, but you know me and my choices, so let’s get to it!

ISSUES:

G.I. Joe #3G.I. Joe: Ongoing Vol. 2 #3 (IDW Publishing – $3.99): G.I. Joe is the greatest thing ever. I grew up on these heroes and toys when they were first introduced in 1964 when I was but a young little tot, and now that I’m a grown man, I love they’re grown up comics! I have 35 sketchbooks of G.I. Joe characters drawn by my favorite artists, so yeah… I’m kind of a fan. And I’ve got to tell you this series written by Chuck Dixon and the over arching plot of the Cobra Civil War are really pumping up my “Joe Juice,” and I love every minute of it! So, if you haven’t been picking up the recent Joe books from IDW, do yourself a favor and get caught up. I even forced fellow GoD List writer MK2FAC3 to buy the recent Cobra issues, because if he didn’t I’d tell the world about his love of Make It Or Break It on ABC Family. Oops! So get yourself together and become a Joe! Like me!

15 Love #2 (of 3) (Marvel Comics – $4.99): I’m a big fan of MARVEL comics, so I pretty much pick up anything they release, and this week is no different. With Marvel’s release of 15 Love, my attention is piqued by the electrifying creative team of Andi Watson and Tommy Ohtsuka. This may be a little known fact, but I do like some slower-paced comics that don’t involve action spy teams and/or superheroes. I also like a nice heartfelt story about tennis players every once in a while, too. So 15 Love is right up my alley. The book centers around a young girl who is working her butt off at a tennis academy, but has to make a big decision when a modeling contract makes its way into her life? What should she do? I can’t wait to find out!

Fear Itself #4 (of 7) (Marvel Comics – $3.99): We established that I love Marvel, right? Good. Then are you surprised that I picked their big summertime event as my last choice? You shouldn’t be! In addition to killing this story about all the Marvel characters getting hammers, Matt Fraction is also killing some people’s favorite characters! It’s the big story over at Marvel, so I’m all in. I’ve liked pretty much all of the tie-ins, but main story is packed from cover to cover with radical action, violence, and great storytelling. I’m all-in, Marvel. You got me.

COLLECTION:

Death Note Black Edition, Vol. 4 TP (Viz Media – $14.99): Another little known fact about “Sir McDavid” (that’s what the ladies call me) is that I love me some manga. And the biggest release in the world of manga this week is the Black edition of Death Note. The Black editions of this popular title collect two volumes a piece, so this one collects volumes 3-4. It’s a nice piece to add to your collection, more specifically, a nice piece to add to MY collection. That’s right, this super cool Japanese Goth story about writing names into a book that kills is one of my favorite. So, if you don’t know, then now you know!

HENCH OUT!
