Sam Raimi’s ‘The Evil Dead’ Remake Hits The Fast–Track With Bruce Campbell, Diablo Cody & New Director
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

A reboot, remake, sequel, and whatever other word you want to use has seemed to have been talked about when it comes to Sam Raimi‘s cult classic Evil Dead series. Every once in a while we’d hear something about it still happening, but nothing substantial had ever come of it until now.

Star Bruce Campbell joined the Twitter the other day and continued ensuring us that it was happening, but instead of the reassurance coming and going as it had so many times before, some more official announcements have now followed.

It’s being reported that The Evil Dead will in fact be remade, and that the project has been placed on the fast–track to production. Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce through their Ghost House Pictures, along with Campbell (though it’s still uncertain whether he will return to star, or whether the Ash character will even be used at all).

As for a director, Raimi won’t be returning for the job. He and his team have hired short film director Fede Alvarez, who impressed them with films like Panic Attack!, a short about a giant robot invasion.

Alvarez also co–wrote the screenplay for the remake along with Rodolfo Sayagues, who also co–wrote Panic Attack!, but the writing doesn’t end there. Raimi and company have brought in Academy Award–winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, who also wrote the not–so–Oscar–worthy Jennifer’s Body. Cody is working on “polishing” the existing script, not completely rewriting it.

In a statement released by the producers, they talked about the remake, saying “We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the Evil Dead series. We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.”

Unfortunately for us, looking at Raimi’s Drag Me To Hell, that most likely means that CGI and lots of it are in the plans for the remake. We’ll all wish that the digital effects are kept to a minimum, but as the late, great Burgess Meredith once said: “You can wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which gets filled first.”

What do you think about the Evil Dead remake and the team that has been assembled to make it?

  1. If they’re really smart they’ll realize that the whole campy play-doh special effects and the over the top sound effects was what added so much charm to the movies and they’ll play heavy off that.Like you said in the article everyone is expecting CGI and what they should give them, pardon the oxymoron,is fresh nostalgia.

  2. If they were making a movie of the wonderfully demented “Evil Dead the Musical,” I’d be stoked.  But realistically, they’ve already filmed a remake of “Evil Dead” once already, it’s called “Evil Dead II” (which is actually the SECOND remake if one counts the not-officially-released yet widely-seen “Within the Woods”).  The original films, which have become monstrous cult hits for good reason, cannot be topped, and any attempt to do so is selling out more than Raimi did with “Spider-Man.”  Of course, they’ve just remade THAT too, so…
