Disney’s New ‘Snow White’ Grabs Director, Changes Its Title & Drops The ‘Snow White’ Elements

The Movie God   |  @   |

As you’re all aware by now, there’s a hell of a lot of Snow White–based movies on the way. Universal Pictures has a very Lord of the Rings–looking Snow White and the Huntsman on the way with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and a brilliant cast of dwarfs, while Relativity Media has an more traditional version of their own with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts on the way.

Walt Disney, who made the classic animated Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs back in 1937, also had their own new live–action take on the way, titled Snow and the Seven. Their version, however, was going to mix things up and take place in the 19th century where an Englishwoman, after returning home for her father’s funeral, runs off to mainland China after discovering her stepmother is up to evil deeds and settles in with a group of seven international warriors.

Now it appears that the movie is trying to really keep the “Snow White” to a minimum (likely to get out of the mess of projects mentioned above). Disney has changed the titled to Order of the Seven, and it will focus more on the seven international warriors than the female character.

The seven warriors hail from all over the globe, each with a unique fighting style. They belong to an order that’s hundreds of years old, but they’ve lost their way and hope to redeem themselves by helping the Englishwoman, who’s being chased by an ancient evil.

Disney has also found a director for the movie in Michael Gracey, who’s got a strong visual effects background, working for the company that helped work on Happy Feet, and has directed some commercials.

Gracey will now begin putting together storyboards and such, and production will hopefully begin at some point next year.

  1. Not so keen on all of the Snow White remakes but “Order of the Seven” sounds like a really interesting new spin on the fairy tale! Good for Disney!
