More a fan of the newest film version of Sherlock Holmes than any other recent adaptation of the character? Like the modern feel he had been given thanks to director Guy Ritchie?
Well, it’s time to bring him to the small screen. Deadline is reporting that CBS has nabbed up the rights to Sherlock Holmes, which will be a modern day take on the “cases of the pipe-smoking private eye.”
As the film franchise continues to grow, as well as the new BBC series continues to build a strong fanbase, the world seems to be clamoring for more and more Sherlock, and it looks like they will be getting just that. Personally, I’m a huge fan of the character, and think that given the right team and cast, this could be a really fantastic series. I’m a huge fan of shows like, say, Criminal Minds, a fellow CBS show, and something that I think is bred kind of out of the Sherlock model.
It will be interesting to see what they do with the real thing.

Really? We already have House and the excellent Sherlock. I love the character as much as anyone (I’ve read all the short stories and novellas) but we really don’t need another ‘modern day’ Holmes. Anything CBS do is sure to compare unfavorably with the Moffat/Gatiss series.

CBS hasn’t nabbed the “rights”–Arthur Conan Doyle is public domain. Â However, their proposed show sounds like a tacky copy of the excellent Sherlock on BBC.Â

The only thing I want to see is Moffat’s Sherlock gain more traction with US audiences because it is brilliant. Plus I don’t really trust CBS for a good drama.

They’re never going to top Moffat’s version– and besides, isn’t that what The Mentalist essentially already is?

If CBS handles this the way they handled “Due South” a few years back (or “The Prisoner” from many years ago) – air what they receive and don’t interfere with it – it will be fine. In “The Prisoner”‘s case they tried to get Pat McGoohan to extend the series – can’t blame them for that, though.

With any luck they will simply use these actors and writers. The “Beeb” won’t put out many more episodes per season than they do now. Of course…..a “Sherlock / Mentalist” crossover is a must.

I often wonder if British studios ever try to remake American shows or if it only goes one way.

That’s just craptastic. Â I prefer the Freeman/Cumberpatch version thank you very much. Â CBS has enough Criminal Procedurals as it is. Â Some of them are not bad for American TV.
