CBS has found huge success with Star Trek: Discovery on its CBS All Access streaming platform. And now they are expanding the franchise with a new television series Star Trek: Picard. The spin-off series will feature Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) 20 years after the events of the film Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). Now we are getting a first look at the series. Check out the trailer here below.
Picard’s journey is far from over, as the tags in the trailer state. In it, he comes out of retirement after a young girl with a dangerous secret arrives at his doorstep. So, he has to recruit a new crew in order to solve the large mystery the surrounds that secret and prevent a larger threat from happening. However, this is not just any other ordinary space adventure. According to executive producer Alex Kurtzman, Picard will go back into space, “but not in a way that anyone expects.”
From the trailer we see some familiar faces, too. Stewart’s Star Trek: The Next Generation co-star Brent Spiner returns as Data, with Jeri Ryan reprising he role as the Borg Seven of Nine from the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Today at SDCC at the “Star Trek Universe” panel, it was revealed that other TNG co-stars would return as well: Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi) and Jonathan Frakes (Riker), the latter of whom was previously confirmed to be directed at least two episodes of Season 1.
Also, CBS All Access confirmed the name of Picard’s dog, who we saw featured on the teaser poster wearing a Starfleet insignia-shaped collar tag that endearingly read “No. 1.” As it turns out, Picard’s four-legged companion is named “Number One.” (The doggy actor’s real name is De Niro.)
Star Trek obviously has a very high place within the sci-fi genre and from what we’ve seen so far, I can’t help but think that Star Trek: Picard will continue the legacy of one of the greatest sci-fi captains in not only the franchise, but the genre itself. So it should be interesting to see how fans of the Star Trek: The Next Generation will be receptive to this new show. We will just have to wait and see.
Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway, and Isa Briones also star, along with Star Trek alums Brent Spiner, Jeri Ryan, Marina Sirtis, and Jonathan Frakes.
Star Trek: Picard Season 1 is expected to have 10 episodes, and CBS All Access will exclusively premiere the first episode sometime in early 2020.
