The first full trailer for the upcoming David Fincher-directed remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been released today. You can watch the trailer below this article.
Running nearly four minutes, the new trailer mixes the extravagant visuals (a Fincher specialty) we first glimpsed in the teaser trailer that was “leaked” several months ago with a stronger emphasis on the film’s story and the character of Lisbeth Salander, played in the remake by Rooney Mara (The Social Network). The central mystery of the story is laid out nicely without spoiling any important information.
The trailer looks amazing and I love the cast Fincher assembled for this film, which in addition to Mara also stars Daniel Craig and features Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, Embeth Davidtz, Joely Richardson, Goran Visnjic, Julian Sands, and Steven Berkoff. Mara is a talented actress and she looks to be giving a breakout performance as Salander, even though Noomi Rapace, who played Salander in the original film, owns the role forever in my heart.
Something I’ve noticed recently is the emergence of a lot of backlash against the original film in the wake of the marketing campaign for the remake ramping up. I know the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo isn’t the greatest movie ever and David Fincher is a fantastic director and all, but unless Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zallian have got some interesting storytelling tricks up their sleeves for the remake I can’t see this as being anything more than a grandiose cover of a far better song. As much as I love Jimi Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” (and the guitar work is amazing, but then we are talking about the god of guitar gods here), the Bob Dylan original will always be the better tune.
I will be looking forward to that Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack though.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens on December 21, 2011.
