David Cronenberg Has Written A Sequel To ‘The Fly’

While at the New York Film Festival for the premiere of his latest film, A Dangerous Method, filmmaker David Cronenberg took the time to debunk some rumors in an interview, including the long-standing one that he was looking to direct an English language remake of the 2007 Spanish sci-fi thriller Timecrimes. But while discussing the rumor that he was possibly writing and directing a reboot of The Fly, the 1958 sci-fi horror film he successfully remade in 1986 with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis in the leads, Cronenberg dropped an interesting little nugget about his involvement with that project.

According to the director, if he has his way the new Fly won’t exactly fall in lockstep with the current mania in Hollywood for churning out watered-down remakes of classic genre films. In an interview with STYD, he said, “”˜The Fly’ is not exactly a remake, it’s sort of a sequel, kinda. Yeah, that was a thing. I’ve written a script of that, and I don’t know if that’s going to really happen, but that has to do with Fox.”

Take that quote however you like, but it sounds like Cronenberg is still interested in exploring humanity’s fear of the flesh and creating a few new wannabe insect politicians. The 1986 Fly was the film that established Cronenberg as a world class filmmaker and gave him enough clout in the film industry to make the movies he wanted to see made ever since. It’s not strange for genre directors to want to revisit the films that are considered among their finest: for years John Carpenter desired to make a direct sequel to his 1982 remake of The Thing, and Ridley Scott has been getting back in the game with his Alien off-shoot Prometheus and the recent revelation that he was returning to the world of Blade Runner for a future directorial project.

Cronenberg’s Fly sort-of sequel is not the only follow-up to an acclaimed film of his that he’s hoping to do; he also has expressed a desire to make a sequel to his 2007 crime drama Eastern Promises. In the meantime, his next film will be an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis, which Cronenberg will direct from his own screenplay. A Dangerous Method opens in theaters on November 23, 2011.
