Despite being one of the more maligned remakes currently in production, you have to admit, the cast for the long-discussed remake of the beloved anime flick Akira maybe just got a whole lot interesting.
Twitch is reporting that the pair of Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham-Carter have been offered the roles of Colonel and Lady Miyako, respectively. The film will be helmed by Jaume Collet-Sera, and is currently being set up with Garret Hedlund in the film’s lead role (or at least, as of the writing of this, he’s in discussion for the role of Kaneda), so it does appear as though this is definitely on its way.
Personally, I’m such a huge fan of the original, that I find a possible remake to be really uninteresting. That being said, Oldman and Bonham-Carter definitely make it a project I’ll be keeping an eye on. They are fantastic actors, and given the greatness of the source material, who knows. This sucker could actually be worth watching.

I dunno if Oldman is “military tough guy” enough for the Colonel – he always seems more roguish than forceful – but Carter as Lady Miyako is pretty fascinating. Â I also have nothing against Hedlund as an actor.
I want to know if they’re still adapting the COMICS, or if this is now just a remake of the movie.Â
