Last month it was reported that the feared live-action American remake of beloved Japanese manga and animated film Akira had been officially greenlighted, and that Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund was one of Warner Brothers top choices to star in the movie.
Now it appears that Hedlund has landed the job. According to sources—first reported by Twitch, later confirmed by Variety—that Hedlund has been offered the role, and that the two parties are now in negotiations to work out the dirty details.
Of the main characters Hedlund will be playing Kaneda, while it’s not yet known who might be in line to play Tetsuo or Kei.
The movie will be set in New Manhattan and follow biker gang leader Kaneda as he tries to save his best friend Tetsuo, who has “potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities,” from a government who wants to use him for medical experimentation.
Akira is currently set to be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose previous credits include House of Wax, Orphan, and Unknown, and Leonardo DiCaprio is among the producers through his Appian Way Productions.
