The first trailer for Rock of Ages, the latest movie musical based on a Broadway sensation, has been released. You can watch it here below.
Set in Los Angeles circa 1987, the story centers on a romance between two fame-hungry lovers (Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough) looking to break into the music industry in the decade where hair metal dominated the charts. Among the characters they encounter on their journey through the highs and lows of stardom are Alec Baldwin as a club owner, Mary J. Blige as another club owner, Bryan Cranston as the mayor of L.A., Catherine Zeta-Jones as the mayor’s wife and an anti-rock crusader, Tom Cruise (pictured above) as rock star Stacee Jaxx, and Paul Giamatti as Jaxx’s manager. The cast also features Russell Brand, Malin Akerman, and Will Forte.
Rock of Ages is based on the successful, Tony-nominated stage musical that opened in Los Angeles in 2006 and has been running on Broadway since 2009. The show is currently in the middle of its second national tour. Constantine Maroulis, the sixth-place finalist from season four of American Idol, played the male lead during the show’s on and off-Broadway runs. Kyle Gass, the balder half of Tenacious D, and Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick starred in the original Los Angeles production. The “jukebox” musical featured the music of Night Ranger, Poison, REO Speedwagon, Starship, Quiet Riot, Journey, Twisted Sister, and Pat Benatar among others.
Adam Shankman, the director of the 2007 film version of the Broadway musical version of John Waters’ 1988 comedy Hairspray as well as The Pacifier and Bringing Down the House, is behind the camera on Rock of Ages. Chris D’Arienzo, the writer of the book for the original stage production, contributed to the screenplay along with Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3), Allan Loeb (Just Go with It), Jordan Roberts (March of the Penguins), and Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder).
Rock of Ages opens on June 1, 2012.
