Test footage for an abandoned game based on the events of the 1989 Batman story Gotham by Gaslight has been surfacing recently, and I’ve gotta say, I pretty much love it.
Gotham by Gaslight was a story that placed Batman and his cohorts in a turn of the century one-shot that showed Bruce Wayne returning from his training to become Batman to a Gotham City when notorious serial killer Jack The Ripper hit the streets of his beloved city. If you haven’t read the comic, it’s an absolute blast, but I could easily talk about Gotham by Gaslight for a whole day. No, this article is about the test footage that has recently been leaked all over the Internet that showcases some of the mood, setting and design of a Gotham by Gaslight game that never was. You can watch the footage here below.
In 2009, Chicago-based video game studio Day 1 worked up some ideas about a game based on the graphic novel and pitched the idea to THQ to try to get the ball rolling on a new Batman game. Sadly, they declined. But as a Batman fan, things still worked out because we now have awesome games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City to play through and love a million time over. Now, that doesn’t mean that the property of Gotham by Gaslight should just not exist, should it? No, of course it doesn’t. I’d love to see this team of video game creators come over to Rocksteady and work on a game that features a steampunk Batman because that would be awesome. Another awesome thing is if DC Entertainment could possibly make an animated feature on it as well. Again, I’m getting distracted….
If you want to check out some of the test footage, all you have to do is lock your eyes down below and check watch! The gameplay looks to be a little wonky considering that Batman can jump to the tops of buildings with no aid, but again, it’s test footage and as far getting a feel for how the game could have worked, it’s there. And it’s totally freaking awesome. By the way, there’s no music, so if you don’t mind running two videos, listen to this to make the experience even more rad.
