“My tribe… I have found my tribe!”

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock‘s latest movie explores the cultural phenomenon that is San Diego Comic-Con. Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope follows the lives of five attendees as they make their way to the ultimate geek mecca.

There’s Eric Henson, an aspiring illustrator currently in the U.S. Air Force, looking to impress publishers with his portfolio. Holly Conrad is a costume and creature designer who hopes her creations will win top awards at the convention’s Masquerade Gala.

Chuck Rozanski is a veteran comic book dealer and owner of Mile High Comics in Denver, Colorado, chasing a big sale to pay off his bank debts. Geek, bartender and amateur illustrator Skip Harvey has dreams of being discovered and landing a gig in the comics industry.

Finally there’s James Darling, a geek hopelessly in love who plans on proposing to his equally nerdy girlfriend Se Young Kang at a Kevin Smith panel in Hall H. Executive Producers Joss Whedon, Harry Knowles, Stan Lee, Gill Champion, and Spurlock have given wizards, vampires, superheroes, anime girls, and sci-fi geeks a definitive documentary.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope is a sweet, honest love letter to those individuals who, regardless if they live in their mother’s basement or if they’ve never even read a comic book, find themselves obsessed with something that doesn’t exist.

That’s what it’s all about – passionate people who want to participate and contribute to a culture that defines them – a community I’m extremely happy to be part of. Even if you’ve never attended San Diego Comic-Con, you will no doubt connect with the film’s subjects and their quest to be themselves.

Being a geek is a rather lonely way of life. It’s hard to find people who are as passionate about similar interests, which is why most of us can be found congregating on message boards and online roleplaying games – electronic clubhouses where we find kinship and acceptance.

I’m sure you can relate, no matter what you’re interested in. If you’ve ever visited a forum to talk about sports or a television show – you’ve got a little geek in you. If you’re into fantasy sports, you’re essentially playing Dungeons & Dragons with quarterbacks and wide receivers. Own it.

Whenever I attend a comic book convention or similar geek soiree, there’s a strong sense of family in the aisles. For the majority of our lives, geeks are outcasts – their enthusiasm is often seen as a negative, a sign of immaturity or naivety. We’re pressured by society to “grow up” – but at an event like San Diego Comic-Con, all of those genuinely uncynical celebrants can nerd-out together. That’s a beautiful thing.

The film features interviews from fellow geeks like Guillermo del Toro, Frank Miller, Kevin Smith, Robert Kirkman, Seth Green, Edgar Wright, Matt Groening, Seth Rogen, and Eli Roth among others.

Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope joins films like Comic Book Confidential, Chasing Ghosts, Indie Game: The Movie, The Sci-Fi Boys, and The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters in the annals of great geeky documentaries. No matter what fandom you identify with, whether it be Marvel or DC, Star Trek or Star Wars, you’ll find yourself enjoying the journey to a place where everyone can be themselves.
