With success of The Avengers well behind us, it’s time to look ahead at what could be appearing in future entries of the Marvel cinematic universe. Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are all scheduled to hit theaters next year and we pretty much know who the villain is going to be in the former, but we don’t know to much about the villain in the latter. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased us on who the villain could be in the sequel about the god from Asgard.
In an interview with Empire (via Comic Book Movie), Feige says that we will see an Asgard that was left out of the first film and his description of the holy place isn’t as pristine as once thought.
“We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster.”
If you saw The Avengers movie already, then you know about a certain someone who is revealed in one of the post-credits bonus scenes. If you haven’t seen the movie, chances are you’ve already heard the buzz about who it is, and since then, people want to know if this character will be in Thor 2. (Spoiler alert: it’s Thanos.)
But just because he was introduced in The Avengers does not mean we will see the purple villain in Thor 2. When asked if Thanos would be in the film, Feige responded:
“No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist”¦”
We previously reported that Mads Mikkelsen signed on to play a villain in Thor 2. But seeing that Feige says he won’t play Thanos in the sequel opens the door to speculation on who Thor would be facing. It has been rumored that the Enchantress would appear in Thor 2, obviously we can rule out Mikkelsen taking that role. He would, however, have to bulk up if he were to play the Enchantress’ partner in crime Executioner.
But I like the idea of him playing as Malekith the Accursed. Mikkelsen’s cold demeanor certainly fits the profile of the half-dead elf and the Casket of Ancient Winters was a vital trinket in Thor. But I am sure we will get confirmation of a villain when cameras start to roll later this summer.
