Say what you will about remakes and reboots (yes, they’re usually a horrible idea and a classic money-grab technique), but when someone takes the time to put one together, there is always that chance it could be good.
We’re still far from knowing whether or not MGM’s reboot of the still-incredible 1987 Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic, RoboCop, will pleasantly surprise us, but what is known is that the studio and director Jose Padilha are doing a fine job putting together an intriguing cast.
It was reported recently that the legendary Samuel L. Jackson had joined the cast, and now Abbie Cornish has been offered a role as well.
The pair join a cast that already includes The Killing star Joel Kinnaman, as the cop who’s almost killed on the job but is instead reconstructed as a part-man/part-cyborg super cop, and the great Gary Oldman, who will play the scientist who creates RoboCop, named Norton.
Jackson is to play Pat Novak, a media mogul with a lot of power and charisma. Cornish is said to have been offered the female lead in the movie, the role of Murphy’s wife, who thinks her husbands has been killed while on duty. In the original movie, however, Murphy’s (played by Peter Weller) wife is only a scrambled memory, almost like a dream. The female lead was his partner, Officer Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen). It will be interesting to see if the reboot is aiming to make the wife character a much more significant part, as well as who will be playing Murphy’s partner.
Have you come around a little on the thought of a RoboCop remake with Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson?
