The Last Voyage of the Demeter is another one of those long-gestating projects that refuses to go by the wayside. The premise of a lone survivor of a ship named the Demeter that was suppose to transport a mysterious – but also dangerous – cargo from Transylvania to England has a lot of promise. David Slade was originally attached to direct the film with Prometheus star Noomi Rapace and Ben Kingsley talking the lead roles.

However, that never came into fruition. Now Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) is sitting in the director’s chair, and it looks like Viggo Mortensen could possibly take the lead role of Henry Clemens.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the possibility of Mortensen’s casting is still unconfirmed, but an offer was made. While the actor is certainly capable of delivering a stellar performance, he isn’t known for taking high profiled roles. In addition, Kingsley is still attached to play as the captain of the Demeter, with Rapace’s involvement currently a question mark.

It’s not known who the character of Henry Clemens actually is. Whether he is the sole survivor who lives to tell the tale or if he is just a pseudonym for Dracula himself remains to be seen. For those unfamiliar with the legend, Dracula’s coffin was transported to England from Transylvania on the ship called Demeter.

We don’t even known if Marshall will follow the premise of a sole survivor telling the tale or if the film will be based on the ship’s log that recounts the events before the last entry. I am hoping for the former.

Hopefully the film can find a way to set sail, because it has a lot of promise, and I hate to see something like The Last Voyage of the Demeter sink.
