Dan Aykroyd Wasn’t Lying; ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Brings In Etan Cohen To Rewrite Script

Ghostbusters

No matter how hard we try, we can’t get away from any news about Ghostbusters 3. A couple of weeks back Ghostbusters star we reported that Dan Aykroyd was saying that they were bringing in a new writer for the film. Now we didn’t know if this was lip service to an always nagging question or if it was true. And if it was true, would they start with a fresh story or would they use the script written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky.

Now we can confirm a couple of things. First, yes, they are bringing in a new writer. Men In Black III and Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen (not to be confused with Ethan Coen) has been brought in to do a couple of rewrites on the script that Eisenberg and Stupnitsky wrote back in 2008.

Variety’s Jeff Sneider is also confirming a rumor that has been circling around the story for Ghostbusters 3. According to the report, the movie “is expected to find original cast members Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray passing the torch to a new generation of ghostbusters.”

While many were fans of the first Ghostbusters, there are not too many who are fans of its sequel. So now I am wondering how Ghostbusters 3 will play out, especially since Bill Murray was so adamant about not going forward with it. Of course he did change his mind along the way, but just how many rewrites can it take to officially change his mind?

What do you think about Etan Cohen coming on board to rewrite the script?

  3. Tropic Thunder was one of the funniest movies ever and gave me a new appreciation for Tom Cruise. Of course GB3   could end up being one of those most anticipated/disappointed movies.

  4. I practically found religion in GB1. In GB2 the closest thing to religion was Annie Potts and her lovely hair!!!

Since nearly birth I an a devotee of Bill Murray and Danny Aykroyd. Later in life I realized how much influence Harold Ramis has had on me, and our whole culture. And Ernie Hudson is definitely the most unsung actor of our time! Where is this man in the hearts and minds of filmmakers today?!? So, where the heck is GB3?

I’ll say what many of us are thinking. GB2 sucked giant green donkey dorks. I’m not an expert movie critic. I couldn’t tell you exactly what was wrong with it if you threatened to give my family a permanent orange Afro. But I’m so sorry, it really did suck. :( This *HAS* to be the reason we don’t have a GB3 yet.

All of this having been said, “sequel-itis” is a common theme in movie making, but it doesn’t mean a franchise is dead, nor does it mean a 3rd (or 4th?) installment will be a loser! GB2 had its moments. It wasn’t a complete and total stinker. Personally, I got the sense that GB2 was one of those failures in life that is a valuable teaching experience. Who hasn’t applied for a job and gotten turned down? Who hasn’t propositioned a potential mate and not been rejected? You lick your wounds, analyze your mistakes, and you apply those lessons going forward!

What worries me about the GB franchise is that going forward, the real “magic”, the real “genius” behind GB, these four men and their close acting support (apologies to the large and truly excellent team around them!), Ramis, Aykroyd, Murray, Hudson, Moranis, and Weaver, seem to be abdicating their thrones, partially or entirely.

Despite my belief in “UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit
photography, telekinetic movement, full trance mediums, the Loch Ness
monster and the theory of Atlantis” I do not yet have a working crystal ball that will tell me whether GB3 will be any good, or I will simply leave the theater in tears over the loss of the marriage of dear friends I’ve had since 1974’s Saturday Night Live (the “Not Ready For Prime Time Players”), 1981’s Strange Brew, 1979’s Alien, and of course 1981’s Heavy Metal!

The dice are rolling. I love them all dearly! I want GB3 to be the greatest of all time! I admit, I will happily suffice with “kickass!!” Good luck! Love,
