There may be more to the untitled Jack Ryan reboot than we originally thought. Paramount has set the reboot to be a trilogy with Chris Pine and Keira Knightley all reportedly locked in a three-film deal. But some of the supporting cast members may prove that there are deeper layers to the Jack Ryan storyline.
Kevin Costner will star as the agent Jack Ryan reports to in the upcoming Kenneth Branagh-directed film, but he appears to be a part of a bigger picture. According to Deadline, Costner will also appear as the same character in the Jack Ryan spin-off Without Remorse. Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) has rewritten the draft for that film and is now ready to direct. And just to make things a little bit more interesting, Paramount is now courting Tom Hardy for the lead role for Without Remorse.
Costner will play the character William Harper in both films. Harper is described as a “true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly, the latter of whom becomes the CIA operative Clark by the end of Without Remorse.”
Paramount seems to be setting their sights on building a Jack Ryan storyline that goes far beyond the character we’ve seen in previous films and Costner’s character seems to be the link that connects the two films together. All of this sounds every exciting, especially since Pine and Hardy will reunite for yet another spy genre film. Or we could just forget that This Means War ever happened.
It should be interesting to see how Paramount builds this Jack Ryan universe and if all the agents in the two planned movies and any future ones will come together for one spy agent-filled flick.
