‘Pet Sematary’ & ‘It’ Remake Writer Dave Kajganich To Pen New ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’

Universal has no problem rebooting their classic monster movie properties every now and again. Not too long ago they remade the great 1941 Lon Chaney classic The Wolf Man, and recent reports have indicated that new versions of Frankenstein (being developed by Guillermo del Toro) and The Mummy (currently set to be directed by Len Wiseman) aren’t too far off.

Another property Universal has been trying to remake for a couple of decades now with little luck, is 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. Now it appears that they’re ready to give it another go with the announcement that they’ve found a writer for the remake. It’s being reported that Dave Kajganich has been hired to pen the screenplay, and that he’ll be starting from scratch.

The ’54 movie told the story of a group of scientists who discover a strange prehistoric humanoid creature in the Amazon that could be the link between land and sea animals, and attempt to study it. Something the creature is not a big fan of, understandably.

Kajganich hasn’t written a whole lot yet, having penned the 2007 Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake, The Invasion, and 2009’s Blood Creek, but already he’s become a go-to screenwriter for horror movie remakes. In addition to this new Creature from the Black Lagoon gig, he’s also worked on or is working on a trio of new adaptations of the works of Stephen King, Pet Sematary, It, and The Stand.

No time frame is known yet for the Black Lagoon remake.

  2. One of my all-time favorite films… and really the only film from the original Universal Horror lineup that hasn’t been remade yet… it was only a matter of time I suppose but, I’m really worried about this.
