Shailene Woodley has been confirmed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The Descendants star was reportedly in negotiations a few weeks ago to play Mary Jane Watson in the highly anticipated sequel, but it’s how her character will be utilized in the next movie that is turning some heads.
Almost every Spider-Man fan knows how Peter Parker went from his first love Gwen Stacy to his long-time love Mary Jane. So, while it would have been interesting to see a love triangle build in the sequel, Sony Pictures has different plans in store for the new webslinger. According to THR, Woodley would only have a small role in the sequel, which would expand in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
While reporting on Woodley being close to closing a deal to star in Divergent, Summit/Lionsgate’s adaptation of Veronica Roth’s young adult novel, THR revealed the details of the Mary Jane role in The Amazing Spider-Man sequels.
The Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic “Death of Gwen Stacy” story.
This pretty much confirms that Emma Stone‘s involvement with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise ends after the second installment – of course there could be room for a ghostly cameo, but that hasn’t been confirmed. It also confirms that the studio is already planing for a third film.
Now that we got a couple of things out of the way, there are a few more questions that must be answered. At what point in the film does Gwen Stacy actually die? How much screen time will Woodley get? Will Stacy die as she did in the comics? Does this mean that Electro isn’t in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? How does a rumored Harry Osborn fit into all of this? I’m sure all of these questions will be answered in due time.
Sony will release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters on May 2, 2014.
Don’t think it confirms Stone is out for Part 3 at all. In fact, I would bet Gwen’s death happens in the third movie and not at the end of the second movie. Then, Peter and MJ are draw together by their shared grief with the possibility of something more by the end of the film.
That’s what I want. God that’s what I want. And it’s not the expected outcome so it could so work. I just want another cute Peter and Gwen movie, and then it can all fall apart in the third movie and lead into a second trilogy as Peter grows into more of the adult Peter we know from the comics. Or whatever. I mean, Garfield will be well into his thirties by then.

The studio has not confirm her role as MJ yet. I think Woodley will play Felicia Hardy and lead her role to Black Cat.
