Tron Legacy Garrett Hedlund Header

Those first few moments in Tron: Legacy gave us an indication that Disney had some plans for a sequel. Cillian Murphy’s cameo appearance as Edward Dillinger, Jr., head of the software design team for ENCOM and the son of former ENCOM Senior Executive Ed Dillinger (portrayed by David Warner in the original film), completely came out of left field and had fans wondering how he would fit into all of this. The appearance may have been short lived, but some of the other character decisions made in the film also lead us to believe that there would be a Tron 3.

Well not only has Disney hired Jesse Wigutow to rewrite the script for Tron 3, but Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has confirmed he would could return to reprise his role.

While promoting On the Road, NextMovie asked the actor about if he was involved in Tron 3, to which Hedlund replied:

Yeah, are we gonna break this now? Disney’s very excited. That’s about that. You know, yeah, I’m very excited, Disney’s very excited.

Obviously with Hedlund returning, the film would be based on the events that occurred in the previous installments of the Tron franchise. Particularly when Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn, pulled Quorra (Olivia Wilde) out of the program and brought her into the real world. Maybe Tron 3 will explore the consequences of that action or maybe we will see Dillinger Jr. emerge as some sort of antagonist. At this point all we can do is speculate, but it seems that Disney is gathering all the necessary pieces to put Tron 3 together.

Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski doesn’t have anything lined up after Oblivion, so maybe working out a deal to get him to come back to direct Tron 3 is next on Disney’s list. The director certainly has a knack for creating wonderful visuals, which was the best thing about Legacy.

We’ll have to see what happens, but if Oblivion turns out to be a hit, you can be sure that Disney will be considering bringing Kosinski back into the fold.

  1. I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority, but I enjoyed Tron: Legacy.
