We reported a while ago that Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse was planning to bring the Oni Press comic book series The Sixth Gun to TV, and now we can report that, according to Deadline, NBC has officially ordered a pilot for the series. This is a good next step for the series which follows the adventures of Drake Sinclair and Becky Montcrief as they travel the wild west, trying to keep six supernatural pistols out of the hands of those who would use the guns to end the world.
The next step for the series will be assembling the cast and crew and getting the pilot on film. The Sixth Gun will be another in a growing number of comic properties coming to television. The pilot for the Marvel comics S.H.E.I.L.D. show for ABC is filming now. We’re still waiting to see what the status is on FX’s Powers show (based on the Image comic from Brian Bendis and Mike Oeming) which has gone through a number of issues, but still seems to be very much alive. There’s also the rumored Chew show (based on another Image comic by John Layman and Rob Guillory) set to air on Showtime.
The comic, written by Cullen Bunn with art by Brian Hurtt, has steadily been growing its audience and picking up many industry awards. You can read the first issue for free through Oni’s website now, and it is highly recommended. It should be exciting to see who they have lined up to star in the show and what the television series will end up looking like once they get in front of the cameras. Hopefully the show lives up to the greatness of the comic.
