Author George R.R. Martin, the man who created the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series—the same series that would one day be turned into HBO’s ultra-popular TV series Game of Thrones—has signed a new two-year overall deal with HBO.
The deal will see Martin continue as one of the executive producers on Game of Thrones, obviously, and he’ll also be helping to develop and produce potential new series for the network.
Beyond the upcoming season three of Game of Thrones, which is set to premiere on March 31st, no other seasons are official yet. With a show of this immense size and budget, a drop in numbers can easily spell doom, and clearly HBO can’t decide on the next season until they’re reassured that their numbers are still strong.
That said, this deal has to be seen as a very good sign. Season one and season two of the show covered books one and two in Martin’s series, but season three will only be covering half of the massive third book, A Storm of Swords, making a season four to finish at least that book all but guaranteed. Hopefully this new deal means other future seasons to cover the remaining books are a safe bet as well.
Apart from Game of Thrones, what other titles would you like to see Martin develop for HBO?
