Cast Will Return For ‘Oz The Great & Powerful 2’; Sequel Will Not Feature Dorothy

With a very impressive $80 million debut this weekend, it’s no surprise that Oz The Great and Powerful is getting a sequel. Mitchell Kapner has been tapped to write the next chapter of Disney’s Oz franchise (WB has their own Oz property), but the film’s director, Sam Raimi, may not return. Despite that possible set back, a majority of the cast are signed on for sequels. But one thing we might not see, besides Raimi’s direction, is a pivotal character to the 1939 original film.
Mila Kunis told E! Online, “We’re all signed on for sequels.” Co-star Rachel Weisz did say something different: she wasn’t sure whether or not there would be a sequel, but she shared Kunis’ enthusiasm. Although there are varying answers to a seemingly simple question, the cast is interested in returning to reprise their respective roles for the upcoming sequel.
With a majority of the characters set for return, one character that we won’t be seeing is Dorothy. Despite Oz The Great & Powerful being a prequel to the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, producer Joe Roth has said that we won’t be seeing her in the sequel. Since the rights to the 1939 film are owned by Warner Bros., it’s unlikely that we will see her, Toto, or the ruby red slippers anytime soon. There were subtle nods to the Lion and Scarecrow though. Since Oz The Great & Powerful is a prequel, and the L. Frank Baum novels are of public domain, there are plenty of stories that Kapner can work with.
According to Roth, “It’s 20 years before Dorothy arrives,” he said. “A lot can happen in that time.”
So there you have it. We got a cast and a timeline for the sequel. So what do you think we should see in Oz The Great and Powerful 2?
