SDCC 2019: ‘Black Widow’ Brings More Spy Action To The Marvel Fold

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow may have been in production for only 30 days, but that stop them from showing off some footage to San Diego Comic-Con attendees today. Scarlett Johansson and director Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome, Lore) stopped by the Con to tell everyone there how the production was going, and announced that it would be the first new Marvel film of 2020.

Black Widow will bring David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz into the Marvel fold. Although their roles aren’t exactly clear yet, judging by what they had to say, they will be holding their own in this spy thriller.

Ryan Penagos, Vice President & Creative Executive of Marvel New Media, tweeted this out about what Weisz had to say about her character.

How cool would it be to see if Marvel brought Weisz and Jeremy Renner, who plays Hawkeye in the MCU, together again for another spy film? After all they did co-star in the forgettable The Bourne Legacy. So they should rectify that.

But enough joking around. There may have been a few hints as to when Black Widow takes place. Interestingly enough, Harbour, who is best known for his role as Jim Hopper in the Netflix hit Stranger Things, had something to say about his character’s feelings about Captain America.

So, is his character another government official who is unhappy about how Captain America is performing heroics unchecked? Also, this gives us a sense of when the film takes place. For obvious reasons, we should know that this is a quasi-prequel. But the way he speaks about Cap seems to tell us that it takes place after the events of Civil War.

While we don’t have access to all of the footage that was shown, Penagos says that everything that was shown got everyone in SDCC’s Hall H excited. Since this is Marvel, we shouldn’t be surprised by any of this. But here is what he tweeted:

This will be Marvel Studios’ second female standalone superhero film, after this year’s Captain Marvel, but their first that is directed by a woman.

Black Widow is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2020.
