We discuss the impact of the VHS media format, hand-painted cover art, and childhood memories of Tim Burton’s Batman, Evil Dead II, and, you guessed it, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Any of you out there old enough to remember a time when Metallica proclaimed that they would never make music videos? That was a long time ago, back before they did their first video for the song “One” off their 1988 album …And Justice For All (and what an awesome video it was). Since then, they’ve made plenty more, some of which we probably could have done without (“Until It Sleeps”?).

For St. Patrick’s Day in 1999, Metallica released the music video for their cover of Irish rockers Thin Lizzy’s rendition of the Irish traditional tune “Whiskey in the Jar.” The song was one of 27 tracks off the band’s cover album, Garage Inc., and went on to earn Metallica a Grammy in 2000 for Best Hard Rock Performance. The video for “Whiskey in the Jar” features the members of Metallica — including Jason Newsted on bass — performing as the band at a rowdy all-female house party.

NASA has posted a video message for St. Patrick’s Day from Expedition 27 Flight Engineer Catherine Coleman, who’s currently aboard the International Space Station.

Coleman, who is part Irish, brought with her on her ISS mission several Irish flutes, courtesy of the Dublin-based group The Chieftains. In the video, she talks a little bit about the instruments and then plays them as she floats inside the space station.

Attention, Venturoos! With the premiere of the fifth season of The Venture Bros. set for May 19, 2013, Adult Swim has seen fit to give fans a preview of the upcoming season. The clip premiered on YouTube this weekend, and shows a solid chuck of action.

Graham and Matthews served as Director of Photography and Editor, respectively, for Michael Stephenson‘s award-winning documentaries Best Worst Movie and The American Scream. They make their directorial debut with Zero Charisma, which is also Executive Produced by Stephenson.

The film stars Sam Eidson (Natural Selection, My Sucky Teen Romance) as Scott Weidemeyer, a metal-loving gamer geek who lives with his crazy grandmother and works a dead-end job at a donut shop. But every Tuesday night, the terminally uncool Scott is the all-powerful Game Master, guiding his role-players through a tabletop journey of dark fantasy and adventure.
