| SXSW 2013 Movie Review: Shane Carruth’s ‘Upstream Color’ |

Upstream Color
Director: Shane Carruth
Screenwriter: Shane Carruth
Cast: Amy Seimetz, Shane Carruth, Andrew Sensenig, Thiago Martins, Kathy Carruth, Meredith Burke Synopsis: A young woman is abducted and seemingly brainwashed via an organic material harvested from a specific orchid. She later meets a man and after the two fall for each other, they come to realize he may also have been subjected to the same process. The two search urgently for a place of safety within each other and struggle to assemble the fragments of their wrecked lives as they are unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world, moving to nematodes, plant life, livestock, and back again. Shane Carruth‘s Upstream Color premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to an abundance of hype. Carruth’s follow-up to his fantastic 2004 time travel film, Primer, Upstream Color screened as part of SXSW‘s opening night festivities at The Stateside Theatre and ran the gauntlet of audience reaction. As moviegoers left the screening I heard “brilliant,” “profound,” “confusing,” and “fucking atrocious” within seconds of each other – a divisive, peculiar film that feels equal parts Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Mike Cahill (Another Earth), and Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko).

| Check Out The Second Teaser Trailer For ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’
A second teaser trailer has been released for Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams‘ follow-up to his 2009 reboot Star Trek. You can watch the new teaser trailer here below. The basic premise is that Kirk and his crew of the Enterprise are on a mission to stop Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious Khan-like character, and to do so, they apparently need to maneuver a Millennium Falcon-like ship through an astroid field and then fly it into a tight trench to blow up the Death Star. From what I understand, this is the footage Abrams showed that landed him the Star Wars: Episode VII directing gig.

Once again, Dark Horse Comics has given Geeks of Doom exclusive access to five great new comics coming in May and June. And you know what? We want to give you a sneak peek, too! Because trust me, these are some great books here. Check out all five covers here below! First off, releasing on May 29, is King Conan: Hour of the Dragon #2 (of 6). This second installment in the adaptation of Robert E. Howard‘s only actual Conan novel is sure to please. I know the cover by Gerald Parel definitely gets you interested with that vicious claw reaching forth towards our hero. Then, just in case you didn’t get your Cimmerian fix with that one, we have Conan the Barbarian #17 arriving on June 19 with a wonderful aquatic cover by Massimo Carnevale (I loved his Orchid covers, too). But the big release day is June 26! Showing off the Shu Yan cover to Akaneiro #2 (of 3), I find myself really interested in this set. Look how kickass she looks! Remember, this is based upon the new release from Spicy Horse Games (be sure to check that out, too). Next up is a comic that originally debuted in Dark Horse Presents: Amala’s Blade #3 (of 4) has a very eye-catching cover from Michael Dialynas. Although I know next to nothing about this miniseries, the sheer quantity of skulls in the art gets my attention. And last, but certainly not least, we get to show you Mind MGMT #12. MTV Geek named this comic one of the top ten comics in 2012. I’m impressed with this series across the board, especially since Matt Kindt is the only person working on this book…yeah, that’s right, he does it all! A big thanks to Dark Horse for letting us have first crack at these wonderful comics. But enough from me, here is YOUR first look:

| SXSW 2013 Movie Review: Fede Alvarez’s ‘Evil Dead’ |

Evil Dead
Director: Fede Alvarez
Screenwriter: Fede Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues, Diablo Cody
Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci Synopsis: In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival. — Ghost House Pictures Directed by 29-year-old newcomer Fede Alvarez, Evil Dead is based upon Sam Raimi‘s classic 1981 film – but is it a remake? In an interview with Ain’t It Cool News, Alvarez commented on the film’s relationship to the original: “Now, the way I personally like to see Evil Dead (2013), it’s a story that takes place 30 years after The Evil Dead ended. The car is there, the cabin is there… and the book has found its way back to the cabin… New kids will encounter it and suffer its wrath.”
