Game of Thrones Title Image

The University of Wisconsin-Madison uploaded a video to YouTube this week showing their official carillonneur performing the theme music to HBO’s Game Of Thrones.

In the video here below, you can listen to Lyle Anderson play the theme on the 56-bell carillon at the university. The video shows the campus bell tower, as well as Anderson in its belfry performing the song.

The Game of Thrones theme music performed by Lyle Anderson on the UW-Madison Carillon. The carillon was originally dedicated in 1936 and has 56 bells ranging in size from 15 to 6,823 pounds. Anderson has been UW-Madison’s official carillonneur for almost 30 years.

Also, in the video, you see that the carillon is not the simplest of instruments to play, and that you seem to have to put your whole body behind it. What Anderson does here is pretty cool, even if it does sound a little “off” at times, but I think that comes from the echo of the bells. I have a church down the block, so I hear these bells all the time and have often wondered why the compositions sound a big “off” sometimes (especially during the Christmas season when they go off more often). I think I now know why – there’s a dude up in there playing this stuff! I swear I thought in this modern age that it was just a recording now. Truthfully, I’d big stoked if that church busted out the Game Of Thrones music, as I would hope the students at UW-Madison were upon hearing it at their school.
