We just found out that Will Smith might not be appearing in the two planned Independence Day sequels because his price tag is far too high. Some would argue that doing the movie without Smith’s face plastered on all of the posters, no matter what the price is, is pointless. But they’ve been prepared to make the sequels without the megastar for a couple of years now at least.
While doing a Q&A session for his latest movie, White House Down, director Roland Emmerich was asked about what other stars of the first movie we might see in Independence Day 2 we might see return if not Smith, to which he replied that both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman were on board so far.
Emmerich also said that they don’t have a final product yet on the screenplay, and he’s hoping that when they do, they can at least lure Will Smith back for a good cameo.
Not much is known about the story yet, but it’s said to take place 20 years after the events of the first movie when we’ve rebuilt to better than ever, but now the aliens have recovered are are coming back for another fight. It’s also thought that a new generation of heroes will rise up, including possibly Smith’s stepson from the first movie. Nothing is confirmed though, so it’s unknown if now 20-something Ross Bagley would reprise his role for the sequels or if someone new would be brought in, like, oh, say…Jaden Smith, just as a random example. Just throwing that out there. Maybe Pullman’s presidential daughter can get in on the fight, too! The possibilities are endless.
