Aussie Feliks Zemdegs Wins 2013 Rubik’s Cube World Championship

More than 575 competitors coming from 37 countries descended upon Las Vegas this past weekend for the 2013 Rubik’s Cube World Championship at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. At the end of the three-day speedcubing event, where some of the world’s best Rubik’s Cube solvers competed in 17 classic and non-traditional official cubing events, a winner was crowned.
Feliks Zemdegs of Australia was crowned this World Champion at this year’s Rubik’s Cube World Championship by solving the 3×3 cube with a winning time of 8.18 seconds; he also won the top spot in the 4×4 Rubik’s Cube and the One Handed 3×3 Rubik’s Cube competitions (one-handed!?!?!).
Along with the top honors, Zemdegs also received a trophy, a selection of Rubik’s Cube prizes, and $3,000 in prize money, which from the looks of it was given to him in stacks of $2 bills, which I really dig (I’m a big fan of the $2 bill).

Comic Review: The Strain: The Fall #1

The Strain: The Fall #1
Story by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan
Illustrated by Mike Huddleston
Letters by Clem Robins
Colors by Dan Jackson
Covers by E.M. Gist
Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: July 17, 2013
Cover Price: $3.99
The Strain is a series of vampire novels by visionary Renaissance man Guillermo del Toro (perhaps best known for directing tiny little films like the Hellboy series) and Chuck Hogan, who previously penned The Town. Last Fall we received news that a made-for-television series is being developed for the FX Network, now this month we are treated to the first issue for series two of the ongoing comic adaptation from Dark Horse Comics.
There is a government conspiracy, a really nasty virus, and a bunch of modern day folks trying to survive something so large and complex in scale, they cannot possibly understand all its implications yet. The clichés don’t even stop there. However, it’s due to the stellar writing that I am willing to walk this rather pessimistic and possibly predictable comic journey a few more miles. Thank goodness for del Toro and Hogan.

Edgar Wright‘s Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy is coming to a close — Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were the first two, with next month’s The World’s End finishing it up. The trilogy combines humor, dry wit, and clever spins on genres. So how do you commemorate the end of the collaboration of director Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost? Well, you hold Cornetto Trilogy screenings, of course.
That’s right, you get to watch all three films in one day, the night before The World’s End is officially released. And even if you do not have a Regal Cinema theater near your living area, Wright assures his fans that there will be plenty of opportunities to watch this film and the other two on the big screen.
Announced just before the film’s August 23rd release, Regal Cinema has released a schedule and list of theaters that will participate in this hysterical occasion. Hit the jump for more.

The Incredible Melting Man
Blu-ray | Amazon Instant Prime Video
Director: William Sachs
Screenwriter: William Sachs
Cast: Alex Rebar, Burr DeBenning, Myron Healey, Rainbeaux Smith, Ann Sweeny
Scream! Factory
Rated R | 84 Minutes
Release Date: July 30, 2013
Written and directed by William Sachs (Galaxina), 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man stars Alex Rebar as astronaut Steve West, sole survivor of a fateful expedition to Saturn.
After he is exposed to an intense blast of radiation in space, West is shown unconscious in a hospital back on Earth, with bandages covering his face. His physician, Dr. Loring (Lisle Wilson), cannot explain what is happening to West or how he survived.
After the doctor leaves, West awakens and is horrified to find the flesh on his face and hands melting away. Hysterical, he attacks a corpulent nurse (Bonnie Inch) – one of the film’s more hilarious, unbelievable sequences in which the overweight nurse runs screaming (in slow motion) straight through a plate glass door. After killing the nurse, the crazed West escapes the hospital in typical “Monster on the Loose!” fashion.

Walt Disney Studios and Harvey Weinstein haven’t worked together on a project since Mirimax closed its doors in 2005. But now the two are getting ready to reunite for a film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s novel Artemis Fowl.
Described as fairies meet Die Hard, the live-action feature will be based on the first and second installments in Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best-selling children’s fiction series.
