Benedict Cumberbatch’s Reps Deny ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Rumors

Benedict Cumberbatch Header

Over the Labor Day holiday there were two (or three) major casting bits of news. First Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam were confirmed to star in the lead roles in Universal’s adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The next bit of casting news wasn’t so much of a confirmation, but just another mark on the wall of Star Wars: Episode VII casting rumors.

It was reported that Benedict Cumberbatch was in talks to star in the highly anticipated film directed by J.J. Abrams. The news couldn’t have come at a better time since Cumberbatch left Guillermo del Toro’s latest project, Crimson Peak, and the DVD and Blu-ray for Star Trek Into Darkness hits store shelves September 10. But all of that appears to be nothing more than fuel for rumors as Cumberbatch’s reps fully deny that the actor was ever in talks to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII.

This is what Cumberbatch’s people told the New York Daily News about the rumor:

“There is no truth to the rumour Benedict has been cast in Star Wars. I think the rumours are circling because JJ and Benedict have just recently had a wonderful time working together on Star Trek.”

Sure, chemistry has a lot to do with it too. No matter how you felt about Star Trek Into Darkness – some are claiming it to be one of the worst Star Trek films in the entire franchise – a healthy working relationship helps a great deal during the production process. It’s a much smoother process when you know the person and you’ve already built a bond on a previous project.

But we really shouldn’t take any sort of rumor lightly. We don’t even know what the film is about. We’ve gotten nuggets of information like it will take place years after the events of Return of the Jedi and that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Emperor Palpatine will make an appearance as a Force Ghost.

As far as we are concerned we really shouldn’t be expecting any less from the director or anyone else attached to this project, because this “deny, deny, deny” comes straight out of Abrams’ playbook.
