The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Thing 1″ Henchman21, and “Thing 2″ Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of September 11, 2013. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

I’ll admit, the old list has been a bit Marvel comics heavy the last few weeks. Granted, I stand behind every comic I choose to put on the list, but I do feel like I should be giving all you fine readers a look at more indie titles that you should check out. Well, I’m changing that this week with a stack of books from all those independent minded contractors. So, if you want something different, this is the where you’re going to find it on another installment of The GoD List!

Locke & Key Alpha

Locke & Key Alpha #1 (of 2) (IDW Publishing – $7.99) I’ve got one more month before giving this fantastic series the send-off it deserves. I’m not sure I’m ready to say goodbye to the Locke family. As I’ve said more than once, Locke & Key is the best family drama I may have ever seen, and yet it is so much more than that. Nope, not ready to say goodbye. I’ll just have to sit back and enjoy this one.

Kings Watch #1 (of 5) (Dynamite Entertainment -$3.99) When Kings Watch was first announced, everyone was immediately reminded of the 1980’s cartoon series Defenders of the Earth, and for good reason. Both series combined three characters from the King Feature Syndicate, namely Flash Gordon, The Phantom, and Mandrake the Magician. It makes sense for Dynamite to combine these characters seeing as they already have a Flash Gordon and a Phantom series, and if you want to have someone bring them together, you want it to be written by Jeff Parker. Parker exemplifies fun comics, and when you throw these characters together, you need someone who is going to bring out those enjoyable elements. I think this is going to be an awesome series, and I hope this isn’t the last time we see these heroes together.

Rachel Rising #19 (Abstract Studios – $3.99) It’s been a little while since I talked about Terry Moore’s Rachel Rising, but there’s no time like now to bring it back up. Rachel Rising continues to be a creepy little horror story about witches and demons and the dead coming back to life. It is a slow burn of a story with each issue adding just a little bit to the larger story. The star here is Moore’s black and white highly detailed, highly realistic art. Each page drips with tiny bits of information in every corner of the page. Every character tic is clear and helps the reader get into the characters head. Sure, this isn’t the best issue to jump on, but there aren’t so many issues that you can’t get caught up in a weekend and if you do, you will be happy you did. And if you like this series, you should also be reading Revival from Image Comics which has some similar elements but is also different in a lot of ways.

Brain Boy #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $2.99) I just talked about Jeff Parker being a writer who brings a high element of fun to the comics he writes, and Fred Van Lente is another writer who does the same. Van Lente has been stepping out recently from his days at Marvel, working for Valiant on Archer & Armstrong and IDW with the newest G.I. Joe series, both of which are some very fine comic booking. Now he brings his talents to Dark Horse with Brain Boy, the story of the most powerful telepath in the world. If you’ve read any of Van Lente’s work, you know that his comics are chock full of humor and action, and this series looks to focus on his talents. By mixing psychic powers with the world of espionage, Van Lente can do a lot of things with the story. Here’s another chance to catch something interesting and new.
