| Movie Review: Don Jon |
Don Jon
Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Screenwriter: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza
Relativity Media
Rated R | 90 Minutes
Release Date: September 27, 2013
Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes an auspicious filmmaking debut with Don Jon, a risqué romantic comedy about Jon Martello (Gordon-Levitt), a Jersey Shore caricature with a heart of gold… and a porn addiction. Jon is a muscular, handsome; an all-around good guy. His buddies call him “Don Jon” due to his ability to “pull” a different “perfect 10” every weekend, but even the hottest fling can’t compare to the pleasure he finds alone in front of the computer watching pornography. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a quick-witted, gorgeous Long Island girl – and Jon’s dream woman. Raised on romantic Hollywood movies, she’s determined to find her Prince Charming (or Channing Tatum) and live happily ever after. Saddled with unrealistic expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara both struggle against a media culture full of false fantasies to try and find true intimacy.

| Movie Review: Rush |

Rush
Director: Ron Howard
Screenwriter: Peter Morgan
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Pierfrancesco Favino
Universal Pictures
Rated PG-13 | 122 Minutes
Release Date: September 27, 2013 Academy Award winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon) reunites with writer Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), on Rush, a film about the ’70s rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Rush stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers) as English playboy James Hunt and Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as Niki Lauda, a methodical Austrian racing driver and brilliant mechanic. Ron Howard has made some great films: Apollo 13, Willow, A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon, and, of course, 1982’s Night Shift. He’s made a lot of disappointing, forgettable films too: The Dilemma, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Edtv – just to name a few. Rush is somewhere in-between, a gorgeous looking film by cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (Dredd, Slumdog Millionaire) with two fantastic performances, but a script that is labored, cliché, and – dare I say it – slightly misogynistic.

Minor insignificant spoilers follow. But spoilers are spoilers no matter now big or small. During the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is forced to seek refugee in a secluded cabin in New Hampshire. Far away from any sort of communication, Walter finds out that he only has two forms of film entertainment: two copies of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. So really, it’s one form. The owner (Robert Forster) of the cabin says that he is not much of a movie guy.
